Coffee and Cancer

Health | April 21, 2015

Day1_Bulletproof_Coffee_pre-workout

It’s no secret that I love coffee, especially in the form of bulletproof coffee. Tea is also a favorite, but coffee is my first love. There’s a reason why I have coffee talks rather than tea times :). I love the taste and l love the boost caffeine gives me in the morning. I totally understand if you coffee just isn’t your thing, but to those warriorz who do drink a fair amount throughout the day you’re doing your body a favor.

Besides taste and a nice little buzz, coffee has surprisingly good health benefits that researchers are only just finding out about. One of the biggest surprises to me is that coffee can prevent the development of skin cancer. In fact, the more coffee you drink the lower your risk for skin cancer. That’s great to know living out here in sunny California. The Journal of The National Cancer Institute published this recent study suggesting that four to five cups coffee reduce the risk of skin cancer by 20%.

But wait, there’s more! Coffee may also reduce the risk of colon cancer. According to research done by Stephanie Stenzel, a researcher at USC’s Norris Comprehensive Cancer, studies now suggest that the more coffee you drink the lower your risk of colon cancer as well. Her research is quite promising and indicates that drinking more than two cups a day may reduce the risk of colon cancer by 44%!

Coffee may even help in the prevention of breast cancer and prostate cancer. You’d think that all we need to do is kick back and just drink coffee all day! That’s obviously just wishful thinking. There are still much more established and proven ways to prevent disease – diet, exercise, reducing stress, etc.

I think it’s unfair that coffee often gets labeled as poisonous by some people in the health and fitness industry. If anything, the only think that makes it unhealthy is when people dump a bunch of sugar in it or drink one of those dessert drinks at a coffee shop and think they are drinking coffee. Those frappes and frappuccinos have as much do to with coffee as eating a giant piece of coffee cake.

Any hardcore coffee lovers out there? Do you have a specific type of coffee bean or brand that you swear by? Any fancy brewing methods besides a coffee maker?

I agree about the bulletproof coffee! It’s simply the best! I cannot do sugar in my coffee it makes me want to gag and it completely ruins the flavor of coffee. I work at Starbucks so I’m and iced Americano girl with nothing in it, maybe some coconut milk but I take my own to work because I don’t like the coconut milk at Starbucks 🙂 haha!

Hi Zuzka! I have a question for you but I hope you don’t mind that it has nothing to do with coffee. I LOVE COFFEE though, I drink twice a day.

What is your opinion on the CLA supplement? I have been taking it for a few months now and it has helped me in my abdominal area and overall finally seeing a more leaner look. But I started to get acne, which I read is one of the side effects. So I just wanted to know what your opinion is on this supplement?

Hello Zuzka, I too am a coffee drinker and love it. In the last year I’ve stoped the sugar and cream input, along with going decaffeinated, I still enjoy my coffee but not as much. I have a two part question (1) I saw a YouTube you did where you put something in your coffee to help the taste but I couldn’t figure out what you said it was, can you help me with this? (2) also what is a bulletproof coffee? Thank you Zuzka you have been an enormous inspiration to me for 3 years now :).

It may be true, not saying otherwise, but for fresh and organic coffee, not for conventional coffee which is heavily treated with all kinds of pesticides and other chemical products, most people are not aware where the coffee come from, countries like Ethiopia or Vietnam (Nestle has huge factory there) In these countries there’s little control how the coffee is being grown, and what kind of crap the farmers are putting on their coffee fields!

I agree with you…..I think it’s important to use organic coffee. Otherwise, our bodies have to deal the toxins which are not good for us.

I absolutely agree — coffee is one of the most pesticide-laden foods we can consume, so organic non-GMO would be the absolute best way to go. Besides, I think it tastes better too! I LOOOOVE my Bulletproof Coffee. I’ve only been on it about 1-1/2 months, and cannot believe the difference it has made in my skin just by drinking it in the morning.

My only concern about coffee is that it stains the teeth so I always drink it through a straw as advised by my dentist; also some people in the health /fitness world argue that it ruins the adrenal glands or smth like that cortisol stress blabla.
Personally I’ve been drinking coffee almost everyday for about 8 years, sometime in the morning I feel it makes my heart race a bit. I gave it up for more than a year 2013-early 2015 and didn’t notice much difference cuz I was replacing it with tea or hot chocolate. When I started drinking again I felt it gives me more stamina during workouts.
Overall I love coffee always did, I work occasionally in my partner’s coffee shop and that’s the best freshly ground made in a proper coffee machine, mild roasted beans. In UK my favourite is Nero’s black with soya milk or for a treat soya mocha with cream on top :)))
    Definitely coffee lover here 🙂

Your not alone. I drink all of my drinks, except water, through a straw – tea, the occasional soda (w/ vodka). 🙂

I use straws for many beverages, especially smoothies, but I don’t use them for hot beverages. My trick with teeth staining beverages and food is to swish with water after a few sips/bites. For straws, I recently thought about (1) the waste of all the straws I was buying and (2) all the plastic that couldn’t be healthy for me. I switched to using silicon reuseable dishwasher safe straws I found on Amazon. They are big (great for creamy thick smoothies) and have a fun look to them. Better for our bodies and the environment!

Thanks for the tip, I think the re-usable straws are great idea.

Hi Zuzka! My favorite would be Colombian coffee and being a Colombian born and raised we drink coffee all the time! I normally drink mine black but ever since I discovered the bulletproof coffee I’m obsessed with it! I hope you post a new coffee talk tomorrow. I have been doing your workouts for the past month and I have seen great results but I was wondering if you can create a bikini ready series for this summer. I’m going to Cancun next month and I need an extra push to feel confident in my bikini!! Thank you for all you do to keep us motivated!

I also drink coffee out of Mason Jars. It’s just easier to carry, doesn’t cost a huge amount and if I lose one I can easily replace it.

I love coffee and tea. I always start my day off with a cup and have a traveller to go to work. If you ever get the change to get coffee from Hawaii, Kona coffee is really good and if you like flavoured coffee, but not too sweet, Missie Pie flavour is delish! I can’t remember the website, but there is only one company in Hawaii that makes that flavour. It comes in a red bag. Mmm
