Coffee and Cancer
Health | April 21, 2015
It’s no secret that I love coffee, especially in the form of bulletproof coffee. Tea is also a favorite, but coffee is my first love. There’s a reason why I have coffee talks rather than tea times :). I love the taste and l love the boost caffeine gives me in the morning. I totally understand if you coffee just isn’t your thing, but to those warriorz who do drink a fair amount throughout the day you’re doing your body a favor.
Besides taste and a nice little buzz, coffee has surprisingly good health benefits that researchers are only just finding out about. One of the biggest surprises to me is that coffee can prevent the development of skin cancer. In fact, the more coffee you drink the lower your risk for skin cancer. That’s great to know living out here in sunny California. The Journal of The National Cancer Institute published this recent study suggesting that four to five cups coffee reduce the risk of skin cancer by 20%.
But wait, there’s more! Coffee may also reduce the risk of colon cancer. According to research done by Stephanie Stenzel, a researcher at USC’s Norris Comprehensive Cancer, studies now suggest that the more coffee you drink the lower your risk of colon cancer as well. Her research is quite promising and indicates that drinking more than two cups a day may reduce the risk of colon cancer by 44%!
Coffee may even help in the prevention of breast cancer and prostate cancer. You’d think that all we need to do is kick back and just drink coffee all day! That’s obviously just wishful thinking. There are still much more established and proven ways to prevent disease – diet, exercise, reducing stress, etc.
I think it’s unfair that coffee often gets labeled as poisonous by some people in the health and fitness industry. If anything, the only think that makes it unhealthy is when people dump a bunch of sugar in it or drink one of those dessert drinks at a coffee shop and think they are drinking coffee. Those frappes and frappuccinos have as much do to with coffee as eating a giant piece of coffee cake.
Any hardcore coffee lovers out there? Do you have a specific type of coffee bean or brand that you swear by? Any fancy brewing methods besides a coffee maker?

Hi Zuz,
I love coffee too! I recently was doing The Fast Metabolism Diet which I couldn’t do 100% 🙁 one of the things I had to avoid was drinking coffee which as soon as I read it, I was craving it. To tell you the truth, the diet was working but not 100% on me because I was cheating somedays 🙁 It is hard to do diets, but I believed in this one because pretty much wasn’t stopping me from eating good healthy food but was more like a restoration of my metabolism which I was pretty excited to try, since it has always been really hard for me to loose weight. I am not overweight but as much as I workout and try to eat healthy and smaller portions, it doesn’t really work for me as in others. I know I have to work more on being strong and eat clean all the time. Anyway, I recommend you to read the book, I learned a lot and most of what the author mentions really makes sense, perhaps you already read it.
My favorite coffee right now is the Allegro brand of any kind and the Black Cat Espresso. I don’t have a coffee maker but I use a coffee cup dripper which I like better than the machine since I ground my own fresh beans then drip them with boiling water, also you could use a french press.
Thanks for all the blogs and workouts! 🙂

Love my morning coffee before a workout. I use Life Extension Rich Rewards coffee because it is supposed to be better for you. The roasting process they use is supposed to retain the antioxidant potency of the coffee beans. Tastes great.

One of my favorite health practitioners, besides yourself Z., is Paul Chek. I particularly love his youtube video on brewing the perfect espresso. I wish I could afford the machine he has. Check it out if you have 20 minutes. https://youtu.be/OxdNh8ETo_4

I’ve tried coffee all ways and different brands and it all makes my stomach upset. 🙁

I have recently taken to the good old pour over with slightly cooler than boiling water and some El Salvador beans I found. A very tasty nutty flavor. Soon will be out, and have to find some other Fair Trade beans 🙂
I have yet to try Bullet Proof,.. but think the day is coming I will try it (soon)!!!

i love dark coffee! french roast, brewed in either a press or pour-over style through a cone filter. i have a stainless steel filter that i love because it’s less wasteful.

I LOVE coffee and always believed there were some secret health benefits (I think I read some articles a while back an clung to it). Going Paleo a couple years ago, I feared I would have to give up my precious coffee but with the uncertainty of where it fell, I figured screw it, that would be my only vice. I was drinking about 2-3 giant bulletproof coffees every morning but cut back to 1-2 when I feared all that coconut oil was the cause of my chin-acne. Conveniently, we also switched from the coffee maker to the French Press due to the potential BPAs in the plastic part of the machine. The French Press definitely makes better coffee but any extra goes cold fast so sometimes we put it in the glass pot with the warmer on. Then I got pregnant and tried to go cold turkey…which sucked! Even though they say 2 cups is fine, my husband and I thought it’d be better if I just gave it up (easy for him to say, he’s not the one with fatigue). I’ll have a tiny cup every once in a while, but save it more for a treat when I go grocery shopping or to the Dr’s, which is conveniently located next to a Whole Foods that uses organic coffee, organic milk and organic pumpkin syrup, definitely not an every day thing though because of the sugar. But oh-so delicious! 🙂

I really like smoky flavored brew. For 2 years now I’ve been loving 2 brands the best. Caribou Obsidian & Peets Dark Roast blends. I have a Keurig now, just buy the K Cups and drink it black. Also love to let it chill and add ice and a splash of milk in the afternoons. Such a great pick me up! 🙂
