Coffee and Cancer

Health | April 21, 2015

Day1_Bulletproof_Coffee_pre-workout

It’s no secret that I love coffee, especially in the form of bulletproof coffee. Tea is also a favorite, but coffee is my first love. There’s a reason why I have coffee talks rather than tea times :). I love the taste and l love the boost caffeine gives me in the morning. I totally understand if you coffee just isn’t your thing, but to those warriorz who do drink a fair amount throughout the day you’re doing your body a favor.

Besides taste and a nice little buzz, coffee has surprisingly good health benefits that researchers are only just finding out about. One of the biggest surprises to me is that coffee can prevent the development of skin cancer. In fact, the more coffee you drink the lower your risk for skin cancer. That’s great to know living out here in sunny California. The Journal of The National Cancer Institute published this recent study suggesting that four to five cups coffee reduce the risk of skin cancer by 20%.

But wait, there’s more! Coffee may also reduce the risk of colon cancer. According to research done by Stephanie Stenzel, a researcher at USC’s Norris Comprehensive Cancer, studies now suggest that the more coffee you drink the lower your risk of colon cancer as well. Her research is quite promising and indicates that drinking more than two cups a day may reduce the risk of colon cancer by 44%!

Coffee may even help in the prevention of breast cancer and prostate cancer. You’d think that all we need to do is kick back and just drink coffee all day! That’s obviously just wishful thinking. There are still much more established and proven ways to prevent disease – diet, exercise, reducing stress, etc.

I think it’s unfair that coffee often gets labeled as poisonous by some people in the health and fitness industry. If anything, the only think that makes it unhealthy is when people dump a bunch of sugar in it or drink one of those dessert drinks at a coffee shop and think they are drinking coffee. Those frappes and frappuccinos have as much do to with coffee as eating a giant piece of coffee cake.

Any hardcore coffee lovers out there? Do you have a specific type of coffee bean or brand that you swear by? Any fancy brewing methods besides a coffee maker?

I LOVE LOVE LOVE my coffee. I brew my own organic coffee in my Kerig so it’s always fresh and drink it black. Up until this past week, I would drink about four to five 20 ounces a day and could drink it any time of day without it effecting my sleep but as I implied, just recently I only drink three 20 ounces and cut if off around 3 pm. I’ve noticed that I fall asleep a little earlier every night, around 11-11:30 vs 12-12:30 so I’m getting an extra hour a sleep every night, which is great. I do miss that 7 or 8 pm cup of Joe but if I’m jonesing that bad, I’ll have camomile or green tea.

I am addicted to Bulletproof coffee. Since I’ve been drinking it, I don’t like it any other way. I do also add a couple drops of English Toffee Stevia. I have tried to Bulletproof coffee beans but they are pretty pricey and I really like a dark roast better. There is some crazy coffee out there called “Death Wish Coffee” which is so dark and so good, really great before a work out especially because even if you’ve been a coffee drinker for awhile, this coffee will give you a crazy boost of energy….especially if you are trying out a new brewing method for the first time and end up with coffee grounds in the coffee like I did, LOL!!

I am not a biggest coffee drinker, altough I like to drink bulletproof coffee sometimes. If I drink coffee at all I’m going for the bulletproof.
I am careful with the studies about cancer, because some of them are run by the gov and can be tricky. Not saying coffee is bad, but saying that 4 cups of coffee a day can be good for you, I don’t know. Plus just the fact that it can be so addicting that people can’t live without it, I think one cup of coffee in the morning is great but that would be it 🙂
I’m sure all coffee drinkers will always look for excuses to drink coffee and people who don’t like it will always look for signs to not drink coffee hehe 😀

I make coffee in a Cona. It’s a vacuum based device, that is completely made out of glass. We avoid plastic as much as humanly possible, specially hot stuff in plastic.

I am the type of person who goes overboard, so when I got on the coffee wagon I started drinking waaaaay too much! When I started working full time it was like 10 cups a day! I tried to quit 100% but once I got down to two cups a day, I found a sweet spot and decided to stick with it. If I quit entirely, then if it wasn’t coffee I could have then I would reach for something else (junk food). I find having coffee with some fat (cream) makes it much easier on your stomach, teeth and you don’t get jittery.
I bought an espresso stove top thinking I could make espresso without the machine, but it turns out it’s not the same ha… but my friends and family love coffee made this way now, it’s a great way to make a latte for cheap and easy at home.

    Hi.
I am just about to begin my coffee drinking again after a paus without for about a year. (I have been trying to stop eat and drink different stuff and see if I can get rid of my disturbing headache) but leaving coffee out didn’t help me.
So now I will go back to my lovely Zoega “mezzo” coffee.
    Love Pernilla

i love the aroma of coffee and it’s smell and taste! i like to drink espresso or some home brewed coffee with a little amount of plant or nut milk (as i’m on a plant based diet). I drink one or two cups a day. when it comes to caffeine i think i’m either resistant or used to it (because of the almost daily (there are a few days where i don’t drink coffee)) because i don’t get or don’t recognize the stimulating effects of it.

Love this post! We have a great local coffee roasting company and they put out some seriously delicious coffees. I grind my coffee beans fresh each morning and make my coffee by the cup in a little french press … by far my favourite, and in my opinion, the most delicious way to make coffee.

Philz is my favorite coffee house in the Bay Area! Every cup is an individual pour over and they add cream and sugar, if you want it, for you. It’s not cheap, but a delicous treat! 🙂 I prefer mine at home with hot cashew milk. No sugar.
