Coffee and Cancer

Health | April 21, 2015

Day1_Bulletproof_Coffee_pre-workout

It’s no secret that I love coffee, especially in the form of bulletproof coffee. Tea is also a favorite, but coffee is my first love. There’s a reason why I have coffee talks rather than tea times :). I love the taste and l love the boost caffeine gives me in the morning. I totally understand if you coffee just isn’t your thing, but to those warriorz who do drink a fair amount throughout the day you’re doing your body a favor.

Besides taste and a nice little buzz, coffee has surprisingly good health benefits that researchers are only just finding out about. One of the biggest surprises to me is that coffee can prevent the development of skin cancer. In fact, the more coffee you drink the lower your risk for skin cancer. That’s great to know living out here in sunny California. The Journal of The National Cancer Institute published this recent study suggesting that four to five cups coffee reduce the risk of skin cancer by 20%.

But wait, there’s more! Coffee may also reduce the risk of colon cancer. According to research done by Stephanie Stenzel, a researcher at USC’s Norris Comprehensive Cancer, studies now suggest that the more coffee you drink the lower your risk of colon cancer as well. Her research is quite promising and indicates that drinking more than two cups a day may reduce the risk of colon cancer by 44%!

Coffee may even help in the prevention of breast cancer and prostate cancer. You’d think that all we need to do is kick back and just drink coffee all day! That’s obviously just wishful thinking. There are still much more established and proven ways to prevent disease – diet, exercise, reducing stress, etc.

I think it’s unfair that coffee often gets labeled as poisonous by some people in the health and fitness industry. If anything, the only think that makes it unhealthy is when people dump a bunch of sugar in it or drink one of those dessert drinks at a coffee shop and think they are drinking coffee. Those frappes and frappuccinos have as much do to with coffee as eating a giant piece of coffee cake.

Any hardcore coffee lovers out there? Do you have a specific type of coffee bean or brand that you swear by? Any fancy brewing methods besides a coffee maker?

I love coffee, and I love knowing I am preventing problems with my body by drinking it everyday. I used to think coffee was really bad for you, then one day I was telling my boyfriend he drinks to much coffee, so he started researching about it. Then I started hearing more good information about it, and did some research myself. we brew it by heating a kettle, and pouring it over a filter, with folgers black silk coffee.

What kind of coffee drink is in the picture? It looks amazing!

I’m rather fond of almost all coffee, although one of my absolute favorites is an Italian-style latte. For brew coffees, I tend towards high-quality brands preferably from local businesses.

I use the Aerobie Aeropress at home, and it makes the best tasting coffee I have ever had. I typically use a dark roast and water temp around 170°F.

Great post!! I, too, LOVE coffee…but I’ve also had skin cancer. Nodular melanoma. It’s a nasty melanoma that wants to quickly grow down into the body….it can be a quick 2-year death sentence start to finish if not careful. The cancer had been in its growing stage just an estimated few weeks, and I was already at an 80% survival chance. Yeesh. After initial symptoms were spotted and diagnosed, I had it removed from my body within a couple weeks. Now I’m going on 30 months of being cancer-free!

Obviously there is no full-proof cancer prevention out there, but I STRONGLY believe diet and exercise can play a great preventative role….OR a powerful weapon if cancer is discovered. I absolutely attribute the ease of removal of such a nasty cancer to my diet and exercise. Foods such as cruciferous veggies, coffee, leafy greens, coconut oil, etc., etc. really help create a worse environment for cancer to grow, can aid in the removal process, and helps the body heal once removed.

Zuzka, you are kicking ass at spreading the good word about food and exercise!! Thank you! (…and I’m typing all of this while drinking my coffee w/ coconut oil!)

Congratulations on your fight! Cancer is so scary. I lost my dad and 2 young girlfriends in the last 5 yrs to cancer that could have been curable if diagnosed earlier. Thank goodness you found it early! 🙂

I want so bad to drink bullet proof coffee but it makes my stomach hurt every time I drink it. Any ideas why? I’ve tried backing off on the amount of coconut oil but still end up with a sick stomach.

    Hello,
    Great post about coffee, Z.
Big up Jonathan! You are the real deal! I am so happy for you. 😀
I have been a heavy black coffee drinker since 14. I am now 34 and was contemplating the idea of removing coffee from my daily routine, but I just love everything about it: the fragrance of it in the morning, the way my mind clears up and the way my body is ready for action in under 20 minutes, the stamina it gives me during workouts and the amount of sweat it generates.
As everything in life, it has up and downsides to it depending on various factors: source, pesticides, age of consumer, gender, blood type, diet, quantity taken in per day, level of stress and fitness and the list goes on.
After 20 years of coffee intake it might be a good idea to take a break from it, just to see how life is on the flip side and to make sure this is love, not dependence.
I use a Hungarian blend and have noticed mood swings whenever I change the type of coffee I drink. Of course, this may be just in my mind.
The fact that it helps with cancer prevention makes me think twice about leaving it alone for a while. I may have been doing the right thing all along. 🙂
Have been working out with you since 2010 and since I found your posts everything changed for the better, my perspective on life, self confidence and control, discipline, perseverance, concentration, even the way I breathe.
The physical aspect I won’t even mention, it is self implied.
Your words always ring in my ears: You are doing it for yourself. So do it. <3

    Hi Zuzka,

Hooray for coffee!!! Can’t live without it. Coming from a Cuban household, we grew up drinking espresso or as we Cubans call it “colada”. Needless to say I love this stuff. All these years we have been bombarded with misinformation about this great bean sent from the heavens. Now its being tooted for all its benefits. Well its about time. To answer your question, my favorite coffee use to be Starbucks’ Morning Joe. Recently however, I discovered Peet’s brand, “Sumatra”. WOW!!! And may I add that I was watching a special on the origin of coffee which was Ethiopia and found out that Starbucks and Peets brand uses the same bean. So for all those folks who want the great taste of Starbucks at a more affordable price, now you know Peets <3
