Blind Acupuncturist

Blog | October 25, 2013

I’ve been wanting to try an acupuncture for a really long time, because so many people here in Los Angeles have been telling me how much it’s been helping them. Even tho I’ve read that acupuncture has really no backing in the modern scientific medicine and the positive effects of this traditional Chinese medicine could be just a result of a placebo, I still wanted to give it a try and see for myself. I have been feeling a little stiffness in my right hamstring lately so I thought it would be a good opportunity to try out something new. I know that we live in a time where everything has to be supported by a scientific research, but have you never experienced something that just can’t be logically or scientifically explained? I did so I keep my mind open.

I did a short video for you guys of this little experience:

It was quite funny, because I thought I was being pranked at first when I saw the blind doctor. Would you not feel a little awkward or slightly uncomfortable if the doctor that suppose to stick needles into your skin was blind? I mean I was a little concerned, but he just seemed very confident and even tho his eyes where completely white, and he did not see a thing, he knew exactly where to shove the needles. After the acupuncture, he grabbed my head and cracked my neck, and then he put me into a knot and cracked my back. Then he told me to turn over, put me in another weird position and cracked my back one more time. It sounds horrible, but it felt really good. I got a massage and then I was offered to use their hot steam, but I refused that because I wanted to avoid the traffic on the way home. That’s something that everyone who lives in Los Angeles has to pay attention to, because during certain hours, our highway turns into a huge parking lot.

Anyways, if you guys want to try this place, I can highly recommend it. Just look up Dr. Hahn in West Hollywood, and if you ever come to Los Angeles, make sure to pay him a visit and tell him that I’ve sent you 🙂

Have a great day!

Why is it that when people see someone who is blind, deaf, etc. that they assume they are limited? Yes I know that there are gut reactions that people just can’t change but to be honest it was uncalled for in this circumstance. He would not have gotten his license to practice if he had not proved himself. To be honest, I am blind. However, I am also a professional, circus performer, and coach. I know you did not pull some of the usual reactions I see – gasps and run away, try to pull me around because I could not possibly know where I am going, or push me into a street because the light is green – but it still was rude that all you saw was his handicap. Every single one of us has one – bad temper, unintelligent, weak knees, etc. – but he has the courage to face the world with his plain as day.

Hi Zuzka, “A little stiffness” in a hamstring could be a big problem especially as you have back pain. When you next visit your doctor have them check your posture and look for spondylolysis or spondylolisthesis. I doubt this is the case, but you depend on a good set of legs for your job. –Chris

Thanks Zuzka ignore the negative comments some people thrive on being critical rather than uplifting – you really don’t need those people in your life. I think you are amazing

You may be surprised that Traditional Chinese Medicine:

You may be surprised the Traditional Chinese Medicine actually is thousands of years old. So far it is hard to tell with archaeological and historical evidence how old it is. Its effectiveness has actually been confirmed by the Western Scientific Community hundreds of times in the past few decades, which is why it is the only form of “alternative medicine” that is recognized by the WHO! In 2014 it will have its own international medical classification codes (ICD-10)! Also, there have been placebo studies on acupuncture specifically, that have confirmed the medicine. This is why in China Western and Traditional Chinese Medicine have integrated. And this is also why this medicine is pervading the West. For example, in Kaiser Permanente has an Acupuncture department. We also have things like cosmetic acupuncture (facial, for anti-aging and wrinkles) popping up in the West. To say that it has not been confirmed with science is fair, however I think it is important to understand that it DOESN’T NECESSARILY NEED to be proven. It is literally THOUSANDS of years older, and has survived because of its effectiveness! By the way, I am a student in my Masters for Traditional Chinese Medicine program in a prestigious TCM university in California. I also have worked in several clinics that are either focused on acupuncture or include it (integrative clinics). The proof is in the pudding. I get to read patient progress notes, so I can safely tell you…acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine is effective. In fact, most of the patients who come are those who have had problems with their primary care doctors, Western Medicine, or suffer from lack of relief from medication, become addicted to pharmaceuticals, or even went undiagnosed because of incompetent doctors or failure of Western Medicine! And with Traditional Chinese Medicine, because it is so different from Western Medicine, and very unreliant on modern technologies, is the only form that has provided them belief.

Thanks for reading my speech, haha. I just had to, since I am a science major, logical and analytica, but am studying TCM. Also, it is the only form of medicine that has personally worked for my medical issues in my entire life. 🙂

Sorry for all the typos. This is me typing really, really fast in the morning before working out.

ZUZANA: if it weren’t for you, I would never have time to consistently work out because my studies take up so much time! Yeah graduate school!!!! Do you know that all my peers complain about not being able to work out? BAH! They’re always asking me how come I look so fit and am so strong when I am a student who spends hours sitting and reading textbooks and memorizing (medicine is SO MUCH MEMORIZATION). It’s because of you and your workouts. I’ve been following you since 2009 and have been able to maintain a high muscle-to-fat ratio as a result, and I’m female.

Thank you, Zuzana, for helping me stay fit through Chinese Medical School. 🙂

By the way, we complete all the courses necessary for a conventional, Western Pre-Med degree, too. And we have to study hard. We can’t Bullsh** our way through like so many Pre Med students. We also have state board exams that are the most rigorous in the United States (in California) to recieve Masters in Traditional Chinese Medicine. 🙂

The comments that people post are ridiculous. I don’t know why you are all having a go because she was like “Huh he’s blind?!” it was a light hearted joke, because would you let someone usually put needles in you if they were blind? No you wouldn’t. She didn’t mean anything offensive.

You’ll just put her off from sharing anything else with you.
