Cold Brew Coffee: What to know, and its benefits

Health | May 06, 2017

coldbrew-coffee-benefits

Not to be confused with traditional iced coffee, where hot coffee is simply poured over ice, compared to your typical cup of coffee, cold brew is made when the coffee beans are steeped in either room-temp or cold water for an extended period of time (usually 12 hours).

The end result is a nice cool drink, that is more concentrated and richer than what you are already used to if you are a frequent coffee drinker.

Since there is absolutely no heat used during this process, cold brew coffee doesn’t have that bitter taste that’s usually present in regular coffee. Without this bitter taste, the coffee’s natural tones of hazelnut and chocolate is more present.

But why is it so much better for you?

Because coffee beans are typically brewed hot, they lose some of their natural health benefits and antioxidants due to the high temperature. This makes cold brew coffee a healthier alternative to hot-brew.

Cold brew is also 67% less acidic than hot coffee beverages, which is great if you are looking for a drink that is more alkaline-friendly. The Toddy Study found that coffee brewed cold had a pH of 6.31, as opposed to a 5.48 pH for the hot-brewed version.

Cold brew coffee also contains more caffeine than a regular cup of coffee, making this drink perfect for early mornings when you can really use that little extra boost.
Some unique health benefits of drinking cold brew coffee include:

  • Improved control of gastric acid secretion, No leaky gut!
  • Increased amounts of antioxidants
  • Less cafestol and kahweol
  • Higher caffeine content

Cold brew coffee is super easy to make!

It may sound super fancy, but making yourself some cold brew coffee right at home is easier than you may think. Horrible at mornings? This will be perfect for you!

Simply put the coffee grounds or beans in a dish and cover with water. Leave overnight, or for approximately 12 hours. When you’re starting your morning, strain this mix through a coffee filter (or some recommend using a cheesecloth) and serve the liquid over ice in your favorite mug or travel cup!

Are you a French Press fan? Perfect! You can also use a press by putting the mix in, keeping the plunger up overnight. In the morning, plunge it and enjoy your fresh cup of cold brew.

I heard recently coffee can increase the risk of breast cancer by 8%. Not sure if this is true but it’s worth some research maybe.
