Create Your Own Habit

Blog | September 01, 2014

Jesse is a typical example of what it means to be a creature of habit. Everyday is somehow based around his habits that make him feel comfortable. We’re all creatures of habits whether we realize it or not. I wasn’t a big fan of going to Starbucks everyday at first, but I was willing to become a part of Jesse’s routines that were so important to him. Now, I realize the emotional attachment I have for Starbucks after almost 3 years of going to the same place with the person that means the world to me. That said, I was the one wanting to try different coffee shops when we went to New York, however I wasn’t successful at convincing Jesse to change the pace. Why would you want to try something new and risk being disappointed, if you can have exactly what you expect?

I couldn’t really argue with him, because I have my own habits that are important to me. We all do. My habit is the way I workout. I love working out at home and doing short intense circuits, because it’s been working for me for over 7 years. I just don’t like going to the gym. I wouldn’t change that for nothing, because it makes me feel comfortable and I consider that to be a positive thing that makes my life better.

I did have some bad habits in the past, that I had to get rid of.  Believe it or not, I used to be a chain smoker. I had been using cigarettes to calm myself down and in all social situations. I started smoking  when I was 20 and stopped when I turned 25. It wasn’t easy to stop and the only thing that helped me was to really accept the fact that I’m hurting myself and everyone around me. I had to think about all the negative effects smoking had on my body, my health, my skin and even relationships. Every habit is a baggage that not everyone is going to be willing to put up with. I trained myself so well to resent smoking that now I can’t be anywhere near it. It really bothers me.

Another habit of mine is to drink my tea and coffee unsweetened. It wasn’t always like that. There was a time when I couldn’t even imagine not to put sugar into my favorite beverages, but I trained myself and created a new habit, that turned into personal preference. The reason why I’m sharing this with you is to  instigate creation of new healthy habits that will help you to reach your goals faster. Whether you want to lose weight, shape up your body, become stronger, or just improve your life in general, your habits is what will either slow you down or make you really successful.

I want to give you the encouragement and let you know, that you can get used to anything, and once you do, you’ll start to identify with it and it becomes your second nature.

What are the habits that you’d like to create for yourself? Do you want to start waking up earlier and do you workouts first thing in the morning? Do you want to cut sugar completely out of your diet? Or maybe you want to start running every evening? Anything is possible. You can create any habit you want and eventually fall in love with it, no matter how hard it seems. You just have to start now and push yourself through the first month, before you can expect it to feel comfortable. Stay patient, consistent, and believe that you can do it.

Best,

Z.

I surprised myself by cutting dairy milk from my diet in the last years. I used to put it in coffee (25% coffee, 75% milk), on my oatmeal, cereal, dunked bread in it, even used it in soups. But then I tried soy milk and the taste has stuck with me. And more recently, coconut milk! I now use water to cook my oatmeal and it has made such a huge difference in taste to me (I sweeten it by soaking raisins in the water overnight).

There was no pressure on my behalf to quit milk, it just naturally happened and I love that I have gotten into plant-based milks now 🙂

    Hi there,

There is 3 habits that I really would like to get rid of: sugar and sweetners in everything, cookies and cakes, ice cream and bread.

Therefore I would love to be able to drink coffee and tea sugar sweetners and milk free. To be able to help my babies with their snacks and treats without “tasting” it first

    Hi!

Well, I’d like to successfully control my desire to eat all kinds of sweet things during my period because it’s so crazy!!! The hormones are so strong, it takes over! I can not imagine the day when I would be pregnant!

Other than that, I have no difficulty in avoiding bad food, it’s not a problem.

I also would be able to working out in the morning…but I wake up at 5:45am to be at work at 8am and I don’t have the energy. So, I do it during the weekend, after a good night sleep 🙂

speaking more general about habits, somebody said a person should have 3 important habits thoughout his or her life: 1) a habit to labour, 2) a habit to selfeducation and development, and 3) a habit to healthy lifestyle. So if each day your activity benefits yourself or somebody else, if each day you learn soething new, if each day you do soething good for your health than you may consider your life a success.

I have been working my way into a ketogenic diet for the past 3 weeks. I became curious after seeing it in Zuzkas blog. I am currently reading Keto-Adapted and I am not surprised all of my workouts were never going to be enough to overcome my food addictions.

I was someone who could not resist the late night cookies and sweets as well as coffee. I also smoked for years so I know how hard those habits are to break (quit in 2005). The amazing thing is when you are eating to fuel your body the cravings go away. The internet (Pinterest) has hundreds of recipes that can help with even the worst PMS (cravings that are caused by nutritional deficiencies).

This is a lifestyle I believe I can adopt. It is hard to get the old belief systems out of your head that have been drilled into us by the media. I like Tatianas comment above, the 3 important habits are spot on.

I am down 6lbs so far and I know for a fact it is not water weight for the first time in years. I am still drinking my coffee everyday and have even had a bullet-proof one…Yum!

Change does not happen over night, you have to give it some time. Make sure that you’re behavior matches with your goal. That said, if you really want to be in shape, you have to eat and exercise like people that are in shape. You also have to have faith and not give up. Ever! You will get there, it’s just a matter of time and the more you do for your health the faster you’ll see results.

They say you have to force yourself 3x before it gets a habit. It isnt that bad. I recon this is true…based on my experience. Well,
breaking from a habit is probably more than avoiding 3x!

I like this one. I had so many habits to and now I am not smoker, I eat better food (but still have some I could work on). Before 2 years I never believed I will love work out and go to the gym. It’s like drug for me. I feel better and have more energy than before. Now It’s my daily habit to wake up and do some exercises for starting my day.
I like your videos and blog and especially I like your accent It’s like mine ;). Have a great day.
