Driving a Safe Car
Blog | January 13, 2018
I was in a few car accidents in my life (not my fault). When I was 20 I almost died. I was pulled out of a burning car and was rushed to an intensive care with internal bleeding. I was told I had a serious internal bleeding from my liver, spleen and a kidney. My stomach was huge – filled with blood and yet I have refused the operation that would safe my life. I signed the waiver and almost gave my doctor a heart attack. I must have been on so many drugs at the time that I didn’t realize the severity of the situation. Or maybe I was just a 20 year old dumbass.
Either way, I was lucky. After spending a week in intensive care and being carefully monitored and cared for by amazing people, I was told that the new MRI shows absolutely no evidence of the accident. Not even a scar. I gave my consent to the surgeon to share my case at the university with his students, because it was a freaking MIRACLE. Needless to say I couldn’t leave the bed for another 2 weeks and I was shocked that my legs literally forgot how to walk. I spent an entire day practicing around the bed like a toddler.
My first walk outside was to have a cigarette. My doctor saw me and I’ll never forget the disappointment on his face. I was a different person back then. Now I feel guilty and disrespectful about the whole thing. How can you show so much disrespect to your own body and in front of a person who was fighting for your health and your life just a couple of weeks ago? People don’t realize that Not caring about their health impacts everyone, not just them.
Anyways, I had another big accident shortly after I moved to LA and I haven’t rushed into getting my own car ever since. Until now, but this time I got a tank. This car has metal bumpers front and back and something on the sides called rock sliders. It makes me feel safe and it’s going to be a lot of fun in the summer when I’ll take the roof off and go to the beach… Today I’m grateful for my good health, safe car and everything I learned about a healthy lifestyle.

Thank you for sharing your story!
I’ve been hit by a car once (2002 it was). Fortunately I didn’t get severe wounds, but my friend did. Even though I had my legs from knees to heels in terrifying bruises so than girls in gym sometimes were closed to unconsciousness observing them I still could be on my feet. My friend got a crack in the base of his skull so got hospitalized. There was quite horrible first aid hospital and I refused to leave him alone. We spent a night on one narrow bad. It was Feb, the 14th. Doctors and nurses couldn’t believe we we sober but we were. The couldn’t believe we weren’t a couple but we weren’t either. Well, I actually started to falling in love with him but that’s different story. So it was February but no snow outside. In the morning I went to get coffee, I turned my head up off the coffee machine and saw small spruces covered in virgin snow. Everything was so clear and fresh and white. Like new page of life, we were granted. I remember feeling my eyes getting wet. We were alive!
Since then I couldn’t imagine driving a car. I was petrified of the thought that I can cause somth like that or severe to others. I tried couple of times but once I heard engine roaring realizing this is me who started it drove me into frizzing panic. Only last summer I finally was able to grip the handle of the motorcycle (I really do want to drive one), start the engine and begin to learning how to drive it. There is a loong journey of practicing and obtaining the expertise ahead of me, I know that. But this first step is huge achievement for me.

Hello Zuzka, You are lucky indeed. I have been in five car accidents, all my fault more or less, so I do know what you mean when you say “LUCKY” and I came through all of them without a scratch to my person and without a scratch to anyone else. I can’t help but believe that ,that luck we refer to is a gift from God. That luck is what has converted us into a different person. When you were twenty you said you were a different person. When I was in art school I had an Art History teacher that told me he had more respect for the students getting B’s and C’s in his class because he thought they worked harder to get the grade therefore a deeper understanding of what we were learning. After a major incident in life some of us reflect and begin to get a deeper understanding and a more holistic picture of our lives, that is being lucky indeed.
I have always liked Jeeps. Yours has a nice color and four wheel drive, cool! And nice tires too. Keep that oil changed and it will run forever.
Thank you for your story. Its nice to see your personal side. I wish you safe travels!

So you aren’t just sitting on a Jeep. You are sitting on your own Jeep. As you probably read lots of people think Jeeps unsafe. But as at least one person pointed out all motor vehicles have fatal accidents. It’s how you drive that will help keep you safe not what you drive. So enjoy your tank, but please pretend is not made of Steel but tissues. 😇
