Driving a Safe Car

Blog | January 13, 2018

I was in a few car accidents in my life (not my fault). When I was 20 I almost died. I was pulled out of a burning car and was rushed to an intensive care with internal bleeding. I was told I had a serious internal bleeding from my liver, spleen and a kidney. My stomach was huge – filled with blood and yet I have refused the operation that would safe my life. I signed the waiver and almost gave my doctor a heart attack. I must have been on so many drugs at the time that I didn’t realize the severity of the situation. Or maybe I was just a 20 year old dumbass.

Either way, I was lucky. After spending a week in intensive care and being carefully monitored and cared for by amazing people, I was told that the new MRI shows absolutely no evidence of the accident. Not even a scar. I gave my consent to the surgeon to share my case at the university with his students, because it was a freaking MIRACLE. Needless to say I couldn’t leave the bed for another 2 weeks and I was shocked that my legs literally forgot how to walk. I spent an entire day practicing around the bed like a toddler.

My first walk outside was to have a cigarette. My doctor saw me and I’ll never forget the disappointment on his face. I was a different person back then. Now I feel guilty and disrespectful about the whole thing. How can you show so much disrespect to your own body and in front of a person who was fighting for your health and your life just a couple of weeks ago? People don’t realize that Not caring about their health impacts everyone, not just them.

Anyways, I had another big accident shortly after I moved to LA and I haven’t rushed into getting my own car ever since. Until now, but this time I got a tank. This car has metal bumpers front and back and something on the sides called rock sliders. It makes me feel safe and it’s going to be a lot of fun in the summer when I’ll take the roof off and go to the beach… Today I’m grateful for my good health, safe car and everything I learned about a healthy lifestyle.

Wow. I’ve been following you off and on for the past 10 years (10 years!), and I’ve never seen you share this experience. You are so lucky. That must have been really traumatic. Thank you for sharing.

wow Zuzka that’ was such a traumatic experience you went through and after moving to LA to only experience another accident must have triggered those old memories once again. Thank God that you pulled through and kept fighting each day to get your health and strength back, thank you for sharing this touching story🙏
Congratulations on your new jeep, enjoy it as you so derverve it. I drove a jeep renegade for many years and it was fun especially like you said in the summer when you can take off the top. You will feel safe and have fun driving it. God Bless always ❤️

Goodness, that’s horrific!!! I’m so glad you made it out better-than-fine in the end — you have a lot of people who are grateful for that…you’ve touched many in a positive way! Your new jeep looks awesome, and hopefully it’ll keep you safe (and that you won’t have any occasion for it to be put to the test! 😛 )

My husband and I each ride our own Motorcycles, and it can be scary when you start to think about the “what ifs”. I laid my bike down while wearing a tank top during a random popup storm when the road got suddenly slick — somehow I made it without a scratch, even though skin made contact with the road (just had a big bruise where the bike landed on my leg). I don’t ride without full armor after that, but I still realize that it’s still dangerous. It’s other people on the road that scare me the most. Day in and day out, I see people not paying attention. People on their phones, texting, or just not looking — I’ve seen people pull out in front, drift completely into oncoming traffic, and all sorts of other crazy things. I think we all need to take an extra moment to just focus — what we do can impact more than just ourselves. I want my husband coming back to me, and I want to come back to my husband (and in one piece! 😛 ), after an outing on the bike (or car, for that matter). Everyone — be safe out there, for yourself and for others! ❤️ Life is too short as it is!

I am so sorry that you suffered in that way. I have also been in a very bad car accident and I feel a lot of anxiety around driving as well. It is something I have to deal with everyday when I drive and it is no fun. I am OK if someone else drives but I get anxious when I drive for some reason. Oddly I was not driving when my accident happened but there you go. The mind just attaches to something and runs with it I guess. I am glad your new car makes you feels safe. Maybe I should try getting a big safe monster car as well! Although a jeep is pretty cold here in Maine in the winter time! They probably make them better now but years ago a friend had one and even when the hard top was on it was loud and freezing. 😉 Here’s to safe driving!

I have a Jeep Wrangler and you are going to love yours. I don’t know if they do this in California, but here in Minnesota every time you pass another Jeep person they will wave to you. It’s just what jeep people do. Have fun!

People do the same here in Quebec (Canada)! That’s funny!

Wow! That was quite the miracle for sure. How wonderful that you had no lasting effects, and are able to be so strong and flexible. Congratulations on the Rubicon! Wanted one for myself 3 years ago, but my husband talked me out of it. Driving the Grand Cherokee instead, which I love, but my heart still looongs for that Rubicon!! Have fun with that beast!

Holy crap Zuzka you are the toughest chick ever. Is there anything you can’t beat? And look pretty while doing it? lol!

I understand about the accidents, cuz I hear L.A. has the worst drivers in the United States. New York comes pretty close though, overcrowded is an understatement and we have a ton of people driving without licenses, or while high on narcotics. Also half the population here is geriatric with terrible hearing and vision, but somehow are still allowed to drive. A trip to the grocery store during daylight hours is like going into a war zone, no joke!

I’ve been pretty fortunate, the worst that ever happened to me was side-swiping a parked car while my blood sugar was high and I was exhausted at age 19. My high threshold of pain made me not really notice I was having a problem and I ignored my pain signals. Ever since then I will not drive if i have not had enough sleep, because my depth and distance perception is the first thing to go when I need rest. I have a Nissan sedan and it’s a perfect car for me, kept me safe as long as I’ve had it. Congratulations on your new car!

That is insane. I’m sorry you had to endure such suffering. I’m glad you are ok. Congrats on the Z-tank, hopefully you won’t have any troubles with your vehicle..or other foolish drivers.
