Five Reasons Why Discipline Is A Good Thing
Blog | April 30, 2014
Sometimes when we hear the word ‘discipline’ we imagine high school principals wagging their fingers or drill sergeants screaming at new recruits. Discipline shouldn’t be viewed as something negative though. In fact, discipline is healthy and necessary when pursuing fitness and wellbeing. Discipline allows us to take back control of our lives when things feel decidedly out of control. By providing focus, guidance and accountability, discipline helps us prosper and grow. Here are five important aspects of discipline:
Be Honest, But Don’t Beat Yourself Up – First and foremost, discipline is not about beating yourself up or belittling yourself when you fail to reach a goal or can’t find the motivation to work out or maintain your diet. Discipline is about building yourself up, not breaking yourself down. While discipline requires self-honesty, it should, in no way, be harsh. That’s an important distinction to make. Always remember to be kind to yourself. Could you have pushed yourself harder on that set of burpees? Were you really that tired to skip out on your workout today? Gently evaluate yourself and move forward one step at a time. Aim to do better as soon as possible.
It’s About Positivity – While it’s necessary to be disciplined in order to achieve our fitness goals, discipline is about nurturing positivity through our accomplishments. We actually feel better as human beings when we set goals and reach them.
Don’t Rush The Harvest – Often when we’re motivated or have our minds set on a goal, we become impatient. We get in a hurry and try to do too much. For example, we may have sudden burst of motivation and try to workout every day for two weeks straight without proper rest. Ultimately, this just burns us out and wears us down. It’s far better to pace ourselves and focus on maintaining a disciplined consistency. Fitness and wellbeing are not about quick fixes, but balance and longevity.
Consistency – With patience in mind, consistency is a key aspect of discipline. Establish a schedule for your workouts. Use a calendar or an app on your smartphone if you have to. Set a time before or after work for the Zgym and stick to it. Some days you may have to treat working out like a chore, but do it any way. Chores may not be fun, but we do them anyway. The days when you feel out of it and unmotivated will pay off eventually so long as you remain consistent.
Don’t Fall Prey To Your Emotions – We all have bad days. They are, unfortunately, a part of life. Still, most of us are disciplined enough to get up and go to work even in the worst of moods. Diet and exercise are no different and require the same mindset. We exercise because it’s a part of who we are and, more importantly, because it’s vital for our mental and physical wellbeing. By tuning out our emotions or, better yet, channeling them in our workouts, discipline allows us to focus on our goals rather than being at the mercy of our moods and making poor choices as a result.

I channel/manage my emotions with my workouts. Its funny: the more difficult or stressful my life is… The more fit and determined I am to get thru it standing taller…I have a lot to thank you for Z because you are part that.
