Algae Cooking Oil - anyone heard of this yet?!

Health | December 02, 2015

I went to a meeting recently and was introduced to this really cool new cooking oil that’s made with algae! Has anyone else heard of this yet? It’s got a lot of great healthy characteristics especially compared to the other popular cooking oils out there.  I learned it’s more sustainable and better for the environment when it comes to producing it.  Also, it tastes really good.

It might sound weird at first, I know I was definitely intrigued… you hear algae and you think of that slimy stuff on rocks at the bottom of ponds or something.  There are so many different types of algae out there and this one is actually white.  It’s kind of exciting because Thrive™ Algae Oil is the very first culinary cooking oil made out of algae, but remember, you heard it here at zuzkalight.com first 😉

The most interesting aspect of this oil, to me, are it’s health benefits.  When it comes to having healthy eating habits, sometimes it’s small changes, like what kind of cooking oil you use, that can actually make a help make a difference in your overall health. Compared to other oils, Thrive™ Algae Oil has the highest level of monounsaturated fat, and the lowest level of saturated fat. Monounsaturated fats are those good fats that usually you find in avocados, salmon, or almonds. In fact, a tablespoon of Algae Oil has the same amount of monounsaturated fat as one whole avocado.

I sampled it by itself and it has a very light, delicate flavor, it’s easy to see how it could help the natural flavors of food shine through when you’re cooking with it. And because it’s so high in monounsaturated fats, algae oil has a high smoke point. That means it’s great for high-heat cooking, like sautéing, searing, and frying. Since it has a high smoke point, the oil stays stable over high heat, which means better searing, and even a lighter, crisper taste to the foods you cook with it. It also tasted great as an herb infused salad dressing.

If you want to get a bottle for yourself you can check out their website.  I’ve shared an info graphic they sent me below for you to see.  They’ve also promised to give me some free bottles so I can do a giveaway, giving you a chance to win a bottle for yourself.. stay tuned for more on that soon! AND I’ll be sharing some of the recipes for the food they had served at the meeting and let me tell you, it was SO delicious!

Just googled algae oil because I hadn’t (who would it does bring images of slimy stuff in ponds) and it does look amazing. Love the fact that it is more sustainable for the planet. Lets hope it isn’t too expensive for people to buy so we can all eat algae 🙂

It would have a high smoke point DESPITE being high in unsaturated fatty acids.
