The Health Benefits of Cold Showers
Health | February 23, 2019
As of late, I’ve started a new practice into my lifestyle: cold shower body hardening. Those of you who follow me on social media and subscribe to my newsletter (you know who you are, and thank you!) already are up to speed with why I’ve really grown to like it. For today’s post, I wanted to talk even more about it, and provide some interesting research. Afterward, I’ll share with you how I started out, and what I’ve worked up to at this moment.
Here are the benefits of cold showers:
#1: They Provide an Advantage for Burning Fat
Even though there’s no silver bullet for burning fat, there are a number of things that, in combination, can give you a greater advantage when it comes to burning fat. Ironically, it influences what body fat you do have into burning calories.
Let me explain.
In our body, there are two dominant* types of fat- white fat, which is the stubborn kind of fat we struggle to lose, and brown fat, a metabolically active fat that functions to keep our body warm. In order to create enough heat, the brown fat needs to burn off extra calories that are often stored away in our white fat. [1]
One of the ways we can get stoke the metabolic flame of our brown fat is by exposing it to cold temperatures. And cold showers are awesome at achieving this. You’re drowning yourself in cold, after all!
This phenomenon has been validated by science. Researchers in Scandinavia were able to observe the metabolic rate of brown fat go up by fifteen-fold. [2]
*Technically, there is a third type of fat (yellow/beige) but for the purposes of this post, I’m going to be focusing on brown and white.
#2: Increases Recovery & Circulation
Cold showers are also good for your cardiovascular health. This is due to their ability to stimulate the circulatory system into reducing inflammation, which therefore helps to prevent both hypertension and hardening of your arteries. On that note, the same increase in circulation also improves recovery from exercise or any hard, strenuous work. Although you may not be comfortable at first, your muscles will actually start to relax and begin the recovery process. If you’re ever feeling particularly sore (especially after a ZGYM workout!), hop in the shower and run it cold- it may just do the trick and provide some relief! [3]
Need more proof? Back in 2009, a study analyzed seventeen trials comparing participants who either chose to simply reset or expose themselves to cold water after exercising. After analyzing over 360 different participants, the researchers concluded that the ones who did cold water immersion were able to recover effectively. [4]
#3: Keeps Your Hair & Skin Healthy
A lot of people swear by cold water when it comes to maintaining glowing skin. The reason why that may be has to do with how the pores of your skin react to certain temperatures. Ever gone to a spa or gotten a facial where they steam your face? In doing so, they open up the pores of your skin, helping them to be more receptive to the relaxing treatments. With cold water, you close the pores, making it harder for dirt to seep in and cause trouble (think pimples and blackheads!). The same can also be said for the cuticles on your scalp. One of the many things you can do to grow luscious, long lengths is by taking care of your scalp. And cold water or showers can do just that. The extra blood flow to the head increases circulation and stimulates the scalp, encouraging more growth. [5] And as for the hair itself, the benefits keep on rolling. According to Chicago dermatologist Jessie Cheung, MD, “… the cold will flatten the ruffled cuticles and lock in moisture to prevent breakage.” The good doctor also has more to say about the benefits for your skin. “Cold water will initially help constrict blood vessels in your skin to temporarily tighten pores and decrease redness and puffiness.” [6]
#4: Improving Your Mental State
Not many realize that willingly bathing yourself in cold temperatures requires inner resiliency. If you’re still frightened of the prospect of an icy bath or chilly shower, take a step back and look at what’s blocking you. It’s really just a head game. Renowned athlete and Guinness World Record holder Wim Hof (the “Iceman”) not only tolerates freezing cold temperatures on a regular basis, but he’s also perfected the act of doing so into an art. According to the Iceman himself, cold showers help to harden the body. The act of hardening simply means you have an ability to handle stress; your mind or your will, rather, have hardened to stress, and you can remain a cool (pun intended!) and level-headed, especially when things go astray. Another benefit that comes from cold showers is the sudden rush of alertness it gives you. If you’re looking for a new way to snap yourself awake in the morning, then look no further than your shower. Trust me, you won’t be dosing off or reaching for that extra cup of coffee after a vigorous cold shower! [7]
Finally, yet another reason why cold showers are good for your mind is that they can help to put you in a better mood. Our skin contains cold receptors which, when activated, send signals to the brain that create a sort of anti-depressive-like sensation. While more research is needed, early studies show that “Exposure to cold is known to activate the sympathetic nervous system and increase the blood level of beta-endorphin and noradrenaline and to increase synaptic release of noradrenaline in the brain as well….cold hydrotherapy can relieve depressive symptoms rather effectively. The therapy was also found to have a significant analgesic effect and it does not appear to have noticeable side effects or cause dependence.” [8]
Getting Started
Here’s what I recommend you do when starting out with cold showers. The first and obvious step is to remain consistent. It’s quite easy to become spoiled by warmer temperatures, so stick with the cold shower and make it a habit.
The next step is to start off slow. What I did was 20-30 seconds under the cold shower before bolting off.
After that, the next step is to slowly increase your time. Maybe after every two or three days, you add another 20-30 seconds, building your way up over time. After two weeks of doing those very brief seconds, I was able to make it up to two full minutes. Crazy, huh? It’s really not that bad!
Another tip that I’ve seen is saving the cold shower for the end of your regular shower. What you do is go about your business as you normally would in the shower, washing as soon as you can, before turning the temperature down and making it very, very cold. And it’s during that time that you start to practice the cold shower. This sounds like a good compromise for beginners, with the goal being to replace most (if not all) of your shower with cold water.
But talk to me. How has cold showering helped you, if you do practice it? Would you consider giving a cold shower a try? (Maybe we should start a challenge?) Share with me in the comments!

I’ve never tried cold showers on a regular basis, but I would love to do so!
My only experience has been very cold showers after de sauna or steam bath when I go to the spa, and I do enjoy it.
I’m in for the challenge! 🙂

I moved 3 weeks ago and my new house doesn’t have hot water yet, so the cold bath is the only option, I don’t have a choice! But finally, after 5 years of building my house, I am so happy and proud to have my own house so desired that I can stand the cold water very well. I have to tell you that there is a “Zuzka” room in it: I told you years ago that I designed a room called Zuzka´s room to train with you and I complied.
Regarding the cold showers, it cost at first but now they go great, maybe I’ll continue even when I have hot water! (since it has so many benefits) Thank you for being my mentor. 🙂

Congratiulations on your new home, Stephanie! And to your own gym room. I use my “office-room” for that for the moment but in the future, when I will hopefully also find and get a house, there must be a sportsroom for me included. I would call it “the Funroom” though 😀

I have been working it into my regimen but HOW COLD?! 🥶 it takes my breath away but I’ve been getting better. I need to do it more cuz I LOVE the sound of all the benefits. ♥️ I’m up for a challenge so let me know Zuzka!!!

I do cold showers after my workouts in the morning or in the summer. However I avoid cold showers in winters as it is really cold in a house (I live in Australia where a thing like central heating doesn’t exists, temperature inside house is very often colder than temperature outside). I am quite sensitive to cold, my fingers become white with no blood supply if too much cold, so I think it us not benefitial for me to be even more cold.
But it is nice in summer and I like it when the weather is appropriate for it 🙂

I was doing cold showers for a while in the summertime…and had been reading up about them a lot!! I started looking into it when a therapist recommended dumping ice into the tub and soaking in it for some injuries my husband was dealing with. He never got to it…but it got ME interested! Unfortunately, for showers — in Georgia, the water doesn’t get cold enough for the BEST benefits, even though it was still cold enough to take my breath away. I’ve read total immersion works wonders. I’m sure even a cold-as-you-can-get shower is better than nothing, though! 😜
I’ve taken a break from it in the winter. We’ve been lowering the temperature in our house in order to try to save a little money. I know I’d just be frigid the rest of the day if I tried that at this point! GAH!!! It’s a little inconvenient for me, too, since I’m an evening showerer. (Not fond of them in the morning — my hair’s length makes it take TOO long to dry. Air drying overnight is my go-to) I’ve tried cold showers before bed, then I just can’t sleep. When I was doing them, I’d put on a shower cap and do them in the morning — it worked great for waking me up! But, whew, an extra shower in the day can get old fast, when there’s other things I could be doing in place of a double-shower. 😜STILL, though…I’d like to get back into it! I think it would be SO COOL to work up to being able to do a Polar Bear plunge!!! Every Jan. 1st, one takes place at the lake right up the road from our house! It would be a neat thing to check off my “has done” list! 😄

YOU, lower the temps in GA ?? haha.. jk 😀
I lower to about 62 at night and with the snow blanket on the house, it has been great to feel the cool air and icy cold rock flooring .. But in the summer, it feels much better! 😀
I haven’t tried cold showers, EVER, but.. maybe i will after hearing this

HA! Well, I guess that shows what a wimp I truly am! 😂 We don’t even lower the thermostat as low as you overnight! (Though, to be honest, I’d prefer to have it lower at night. I like sleeping at lower temps and piling on the blankets. My husband would go nuts, though! And he grew up in New England! 😂) We keep it at 65 at night and 66 during the day (but that’s down from 69 during the day…we’re scaling back. We like it WARM! 😜)
I’ve read that you can boost the cold benefits even more by going from cold to hot to cold to hot — so maybe rolling around in the snow a little bit then dashing in for your epsom bath might give you the best of both worlds (I know that’s a thing with snow-to-sauna-to-snow-etc. in some places). Buuuuut it also sounds like a bit of a chore if one’s home isn’t set up for that sort of thing! 😜

guess what..? I did the cold shower this morning – easing my way into it, of course! I loved it!!
After my HOT bath in Epson for about 20-30 mins, as the tub is draining, I turn on the cold and make it colder and colder till the tub is empty and that takes about 3-4 minutes. I could keep my toes warm and not shock my body ..
If that’s wrong, oh well.. but it sure worked to help spark my morning, and I felt I was way more clear and less groggy, all day.
🙂 .. I’ll be doing that again, for sure!
We have a LOT of snow this year – 12 feet in February, alone .. But it’s so icy with the warming days, now, it would be very painful to get naked on it… hahahaha

Doesn’t it feel great?! 😄Well, afterwards, at least! That sounds like a nice way to get used to it! I do it in the shower and have found that what works for me is taking a few REALLY deep breaths all the way in and all the way out…then just going for it and rushing for the cold water, aiming for the head with a forced exhale as the water hits. It sounds funny, but it seems to help the initial shock! 😂
I prefer evening showers, but I decided to try a cold shower out again this morning. It does feel sooooo good afterwards! (LOL, our youngest cat was looking at me with big eyes like I was CRAZY when I opened up the curtain to step out) I’m happy that I didn’t take any steps backwards as far as taking the “plunge” after such a long break! But I took some steps backwards in the time I can stay under — I only made it long enough to wash my hair and soap up really quickly. I usually do my main workout — the Zuzka ones! — in the afternoon/evening, but I like to hit the elliptical in the morning before breakfast for 30-40 minutes as a little bonus for fun…running while playing video games. 😝 I get good and sweaty, so it IS a good opportunity for an extra shower! I’ll have to start adding the cold showers into the morning routine a good, quick way (no waiting for the water to warm up) to get all freshened up after that! 😛
WOOOWWW! 12 feet!! The most I’ve been able to experience was about 3-4 feet! I’ll bet it’s beautiful, though! 😊 Prettier than the mud here! 😜 I tried for some muddy mountain biking last weekend…to find that with all the rain, my favorite trail was gone due to flooding. The lake completely submerged it (DEEP!) less than a mile in. 😭I’ll have to opt for non-lake trails! 🙂

all i can say is .. w o w … what a strong and adventurous person you are! and fun, i can only imagine! haha! if i could be up earlier to workout again, that would be awesome, but the dark winters are JUST coming out into the sun, again, so it’s all sleep, work, repeat for me, right now.. Just a few more days/weeks to the sun fun again…… !!! 😀 Spring skiing will be good here, tho.. as long as it’s cool all day..
I can’t get my hair wet every day – because it’s so long and thick, i go about 7-10 days between washings, SO, the head-to-toe cold shower is just not a thing for me.. I don’t wash my hair in the shower, either – only under the tub faucet, so I can get it all!
today i am in a bit of hurt because i accidentally colored my hair a tad lighter while i still have very blackish body of hair from about 2″ out to the tips (16-20″ length).. SO, I am doing the Vitamin C/shampoo dye remover for the next couple hours to see how much i can reverse.. but I am HOPING I didn’t bleach my roots and cause the opposite effect i was after in the first place, that of covering white hair that’s coming in, here and there… lol!! it’s a race against time, too.. I have to look my normal me by tomorrow am, of course! ……. iy yi yi!!!
I should have just stayed home, worked and skipped the hair session.. :/
ya.. and been available to hike our mt again for the sunset this evening.. .. but no!… well, i’ll let you know how it turns out, now that i’ve gone and told someone all about my worst hair experience e v e r.. haha

update on the hair issue.. the C didn’t work for me.. maybe I needed to wait a couple weeks after the mishap, and then do it – but my roots were too light! .. :O
I put on a baseball cap and run to get another darker color.. believe it or not, that appears to have worked. Hair is still wet, but roots aren’t light anymore! WHEW!!!!! .. it’ll still be a darker, near-black, but it’s way better on me than blond! (done that.. )
hope you’re having a good weekend

Oh my goodness!!! What a nightmare with the hair stuff!! I’m glad you were able to correct it so that it wasn’t so light! And YAY for hats in the meantime!! 😜 Whew, with my type of hair, I *have* to wash it every day. It seems like any tiny change in routine (whether the routine is sleep/waking timing, eating timing, or even hair-washing frequency) triggers a migraine these days for me — I get headaches when I go without a hair wash, then the headache triggers a migraine. *sigh* 😖
lol! I don’t know about adventurous! Sounds like you’re the adventurous one, having such fun-sounding hikes in the snow! 😄 My early timing has its downside: I’m ready to wind down early in the evening. If we’re still out and about after 7, we get fidgety as it’s “starting to get a little late.” 😂It’s so weird: I used to NOT be an early morning person (same with my husband!), then all of a sudden last summer, I was just ready to get up and do stuff in the early hours (weekends, too!)…buuuuuut me and my husband are both ready to wind down around 8:30. The flip side to it all! 😂

haha!! 😀 I am a new fan of hats, too! hahaha!
wow… migraines are no joke… I get the painless kind, in my eyes, once in a blue moon (1-2x a year, at most), but wow.. I’m sorry that happens to you!!
a neighbor of mine, whom I also work with, gets up at 5 am.. works out, gets to work from 8 am to 6 pm, 4 days a week… She n hubby insist on that early time!
I only do that when I MUST, but here, it’s about the sun – we don’t get it as much as you, so I have to stay up later in the summer to get a good dose – because in winter, we lose a LOT of it. By winter, I’m up later, in the dark, and down later, too.. I try to keep the same up and down times so that I’m conditioned to get moving at the same times, regularly.
– so – it’s like 2 hours past your bedtime as I write this, and sneaking up on my own by 10 pm, here.. lol! 😀 (up at 6 am)
Hope you have a great day tomorrow! 😀

I have family who used to get the visual disturbances but no pain. I know that can get annoying (especially if they hit when you’re driving!) That’s great that it’s without the pain, though!! I’ve been able to track mine, so I know ROUGHLY when they’re going to hit and can (mostly) plan around them. It really helps with making sure I keep up with workouts! 😜
Wow! When working 8-6, getting all working out all taken care of first thing in the morning is definitely the way to go!! I work from home (except for a few times a year when I run to the office for meetings), so it makes it easier to grab a little something in the morning…then a little something after work. Any time I go in to the office, I’m too wiped out by the time I get home to do much of anything! 😳
OOF, and I totally get that with the light! My hours would shift like that, in that sort of situation! Ha ha, and my bedtime USED to be at 10! 😄 (That’s a comfortable time: not too late, but not too early!)

When I lived in Hawaii, a few years ago, we didn’t have a/c. Showers *as cold as possible* were a requirement year-round for me, and during the summer, twice a day, at least. The hottest I ever made them was luke warm in the winter, to start, but would phase out to all cold.
Icing my shoulder was part of my physical therapy, and it was WAY better for it than heat.
Then we moved to Alaska, and I stopped the cold showers, because it was chilly (summer) to freezing (9 months of long winter) outside. Ever forget what it feels like to be warm outside? Taking a cold shower there never crossed my mind as desirable. I should have tried it – Maybe it would have made it feel warmer outside?
Now that I’m back at a lower latitude, I do this in the summer, but will start incorporating this in now to make it a year-round habit. It definitely wakes me up and gets my blood going!

Hi Zuzka, I’ve been taking “cold showers” since last December. Because it is winter time over here plus my house it is kind of cold, I start with a regular shower then I let it run super hot for about 30 seconds and I turn off the hot water. I let the cold water run on my body for about 5 minutes (Of course, I built up slowly to this time. I started with about a minute, then increased gradually to about 5 min). I noticed my skin is a lot smoother with fewer wrinkles. Also, my hair is silkier and shinier. I’m loving it! Also, its puts me in a better mood. I think cold shower/ rinse is a keeper, even during winter!

Day 1: Started warm, then turned it down to tepid for a few minutes, to adjust, then ended with full cold for a few minutes. It’s like when you go into the cold ocean – you just have to jump and go all in! lol Reminded me of camping. Felt great, and very much wakes your whole body up! This winter feels long, and I forgot just how great cold showers feel. Definitely making this a year-round habit! <3

hi there, what part of the earth are you spending winter in?
I’m in central Idaho – snow for years here, this year.. :O :O :O
I’ve not tried cold showers because I’m into hot Epson salt soaks first thing in the morning .. but I’ll have to check it out with all the great talk about it here with Z’s team

Hi! Currently, I’m in New Jersey, near Philadelphia. I’m a west coast girl, have lived in the South, but it’s my first time in the northeast.
Hot epsom salt soaks sound divine! I’m usually on the go so much, I can’t remember the last time I had one – will have to slow down and try one on the weekend.
Ease yourself into the cold shower thing – it will definitely be a shock to your body, but it’s also a fun challenge – Can I do this? That’s how I look at it. Challenging myself to try something new. Even if you end up not liking it, it’s fun to try just once, as then you know for sure.
My husband loves *scalding* hot showers. I mean, I love me a hot shower, but his literally burns me. He admits he’s read tons of studies on how good cold showers are for you, but is a bit reluctant.
Central Idaho – I feel ya on the long winters, and wanting to only feel the heat! Gorgeous there, though! <3
Last night, for my nightly face washing ritual, I washed my face in only cold water, and by then, the water was so cold, it was burning my hands. I pushed through it and it did make my face feel great.
When I was doing PT for my shoulder, they had me alternate between hot and cold presses, so I think there are benefits to both, it's just we tend to lean toward hot. 🙂

It sounds like you’ve lived in many neat areas 🙂 MG44. (From sunny Hawaii to Alaska!- we are headed to Maui for spring break and Icannot wait🌞) I’m up in BC, Canada and we get very long & cold winters as well. To be honest I rather hate the cold (I’m one of those ppl who are ALWAYS freezing pretty much) but I am intrigued of the cold showers benefits list and think I will have to give it a try❗️

Maui – nice! I’m actually from Hawaii, but left at 19. I returned for a year for a work project in 2014. I’m a geologist/scientist/project manager/teacher, so I go where the job opportunities are at. 🙂
Love Canada, btw – gorgeous scenery, friendly people, clean cities, yummy food – I can’t ever get enough, when I visit!
Day 2 of cold shower – it’s still jarring, when I turn it down to cold. For whatever reason, getting my head soaked first helps, and then I jump in for the full “AAAA!!!!” effect. lol I’m determined to figure out the best way to get used to it.

Ok, I thought there was a way to DM you, but I guess not, so I’ll just comment here – someone else might like the links for their trip, too:
Have you been to Maui before? If not, here are some suggestions (although tripadvisor has just about everything there is to know):
– Haleakala – popular sunrise viewing spot (it will be cold and windy, possible snow at the top). You can bike downhill from the top: http://www.bikemaui.com/
https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g143033-d103255-Reviews-Haleakala_Crater-Haleakala_National_Park_Maui_Hawaii.html
– Ka’anapali beach – The large banyon trees are amazing to see, among other things.

– Iao needle – short stop on the way to somewhere else, like Hana
https://www.govisithawaii.com/2010/06/21/make-a-point-to-visit-this-mauis-iao-needle/
– Road to Hana – Beautiful drive, but be sure to take bonine or some kind of motion sickness preventor – very windy roads along cliffs in some areas. There’s a black sand beach out that way.

– Maui Ocean Center

Other stuff: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attractions-g29220-Activities-Maui_Hawaii.html
Resorts – I think of Maui as a great place if you want to just hang out at the resort most of the time. We stayed at the Grand Wailea Maui (for free, thanks to work), and it was incredible. https://www.grandwailea.com/
Just a few, but there are a ton of things to do, from helicopter tours, to snorkeling (my fave!), surfing, whale watching, diving, etc. You can also do a day trip to Kauai (where movies like Jurassic Park and Avatar were filmed). If you go to Kauai, the helicopter tour is a must – ! <3

💕💕💕🤗🤗🤗🏝🏝🏝🏝🙌🙌 Oh Thankyou for all the Yummy Information I’m completely stoked to make up our itinerary 🏖⛰🌋🏄🏻♀️🧘🏽♀️☀️☀️snorkeling tour is a must, road trips😃 zip lining, And was also hoping to catch some goat yoga class, & paddle boarding. Do you know if they have Any Kango Jumps classes in Maui? Iam a KJ Instructor and thought it would be nice to bounce in Maui.

Ooooh, I haven’t heard of a KJ class in Hawaii – from my experience growing up and going back to live there, the remoteness tends to mean they are a bit delayed in presenting new trends. Good news about that – if you wanted to move to Hawaii, you could easily start a KJ business! 🙂
Goat Yoga – YES! At this place, there are no walkins, so book early: https://mauigoatyoga.com/ I <3 pygmy goats, and have always wanted to have a little farm with them.
Ziplining – this place is awesome: https://piiholozipline.com/
Paddle boarding/SUP is everywhere – you could probably find a vendor renting them on the beach! I've seen tourists just go to the Costco (there's one in Kahului – $5 roast chicken!) to buy one (or snorkel gear), rather than rent! 😉

Day 3 : BREAKTHROUGH! Today I decided to start the shower luke warm (not hot), and then with my back toward the water, turn it down a little, get used to it for a minute, turn around, then repeat. 4 rounds of later, and I was at the coldest it would get, and it didn’t feel bad at all. What?! It made me doubt that the water was as cold as it felt yesterday, but it was 32F/0C outside, so I guess it was the same. ??? So, yeah, wow, that didn’t take long to get used to. Mission accomplished! lol
YMMV – It might take others longer, but if you put your mind to it and figure out what works for you – you can do this! 🙂 <3
