Cold Brew Coffee: What to know, and its benefits
Health | May 06, 2017
Not to be confused with traditional iced coffee, where hot coffee is simply poured over ice, compared to your typical cup of coffee, cold brew is made when the coffee beans are steeped in either room-temp or cold water for an extended period of time (usually 12 hours).
The end result is a nice cool drink, that is more concentrated and richer than what you are already used to if you are a frequent coffee drinker.
Since there is absolutely no heat used during this process, cold brew coffee doesn’t have that bitter taste that’s usually present in regular coffee. Without this bitter taste, the coffee’s natural tones of hazelnut and chocolate is more present.
But why is it so much better for you?
Because coffee beans are typically brewed hot, they lose some of their natural health benefits and antioxidants due to the high temperature. This makes cold brew coffee a healthier alternative to hot-brew.
Cold brew is also 67% less acidic than hot coffee beverages, which is great if you are looking for a drink that is more alkaline-friendly. The Toddy Study found that coffee brewed cold had a pH of 6.31, as opposed to a 5.48 pH for the hot-brewed version.
Cold brew coffee also contains more caffeine than a regular cup of coffee, making this drink perfect for early mornings when you can really use that little extra boost.
Some unique health benefits of drinking cold brew coffee include:
- Improved control of gastric acid secretion, No leaky gut!
- Increased amounts of antioxidants
- Less cafestol and kahweol
- Higher caffeine content
Cold brew coffee is super easy to make!
It may sound super fancy, but making yourself some cold brew coffee right at home is easier than you may think. Horrible at mornings? This will be perfect for you!
Simply put the coffee grounds or beans in a dish and cover with water. Leave overnight, or for approximately 12 hours. When you’re starting your morning, strain this mix through a coffee filter (or some recommend using a cheesecloth) and serve the liquid over ice in your favorite mug or travel cup!
Are you a French Press fan? Perfect! You can also use a press by putting the mix in, keeping the plunger up overnight. In the morning, plunge it and enjoy your fresh cup of cold brew.

I wonder if you can make a bulletproof version of it? I am thinking to get the coconut oil, butter and sweetener in small amount of lukewarm water to get it to melt, add it to cold brew coffee and then blend altogether.
though I really enjoy warm beverages, I may heat it up a bit.

I wonder if / when it will go bad? Is it possible to make a large batch and store it for weeks or even longer?

Absolutely! I always make a lot in a french press, then store it in the fridge for up to two weeks. 🙂

Haha, this is so nice. I actually started making cold brew for myself a few days ago, just because hot coffee gave me gastric issues. I’m absolutely addicted to cold brew now. What’s even more amazing, it gives me an insane kick before my workouts. I squeeze all the reps with Zuzka during most intense exercises. I pour my cold brew over some milk, put ice, some swerve, and voila!!!! So delicious! I noticed it also doesn’t give me sudden energy crash. So much better of a choice!

The nice thing about the cold brew coffee is that it lasts in the fridge for up to 2 weeks, and you can drink it warm as well. I use the Toddy Cold Brew system, and it makes about a bout 2 pints of concentrated coffee overnight. You can add it to hot water, cold water, or hot/cold milk, and it is a 1:3 or 1:4 ratio. It lasts us about a week in our house and makes really smooth yummy coffee that doesn’t taste reheated at all. The pH difference has made a world of difference with my stomach issues. I highly recommend it to habitual coffee drinkers.

In the past I would use a coffee filter, some twine and grounds and make a coffee bag which I would soak overnight.
