Drink Coffee AND Get Healthy!
Health | July 06, 2016
I love coffee! Not a day goes by when I don’t enjoy at least one cup. I love coffee so much that I write about it all the time. In fact, I wrote an article about the many health benefits of coffee almost exactly a year ago. And in 2014, I blogged about what a great natural workout enhancer is it.
When I drink coffee I like to add in some unsalted, grass-fed butter and coconut oil. Then I blend it up until it’s a rich, creamy, frothy delight. Some people call that bulletproof coffee. Here are my two cents about the bulletproof recipe I use.
Anyway, like I said, I’m a coffee enthusiast. So I was super pumped when I recently saw the news that a panel of experts brought together by the World Health Organization (W.H.O.) has announced that the evidence to support the claim that coffee causes cancer is lacking. And even better, coffee may help to prevent uterine and liver cancer, among others. That’s quite a one-eighty!
25 years ago a W.H.O.panel actually condemned coffee as a possible cause of cancer. TheNew York Times reports, “The announcement marked a rare reversal for the panel, which had previously described coffee as ‘possibly carcinogenic’ in 1991 and linked it to bladder cancer. But since then a large body of research has portrayed coffee as a surprising elixir, finding lower rates of heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, neurological disorders and several cancers in those who drink it regularly.”
And this is no small study. The Huffington Post reports, “For this evaluation 23 scientists from 10 countries met in Lyon, France, and evaluated 1000 observational and experimental studies that have accumulated in the meantime [since the 1991 panel convened].”
The W.H.O. panel did release one warning. NPR reports, “One word of caution: The agency warns that extremely hot beverages may increase the risk of [esophageal] cancer. For instance, the group looked at studies from South America where mate is consumed at very hot temperatures. The group concludes that the cancer-causing effects probably occur at drinking temperatures of 150 degrees Fahrenheit and above.” Yikes, that’s a hot cup of coffee.
Guys, whether you like it black or iced or bulletproof or creamy with almond milk, I recommend coffee. It has always made me feel good and more and more research is backing up what I’ve always know to be true: Coffee is naturally delicious and bursting with health benefits. Just don’t drink it when it’s boiling hot!
You know, all this talking about coffee is making me want one! Excuse me while I go brew up some yumminess and then drink it at a moderately warm temperature 😉

My only vice is coffee. After the last earthquake we had, I have instant coffee incase of emergency and power goes out. Is that sad or what?! Haha

The problem back in the day was cigarette smokers also drank coffee and they weren’t separating the two in the studies.

I started coffee only after my second pregnancy…so I lived 4 decades without. When I was kid, the smell even used to make me wanna puke. Now I drink BP every morning and workout fasted at lunch time…living on my BP coffee. That is also a one-eighty 🙂
Have you read the book ” bulletproof diet”? The so claimed inventor of the BP coffee gives also a lot of info about what is good and bad around this beverage. Choose the right ingredients.

I was going to say something similar – that a lot of coffee sold around the world is grown with fertilizers and processed with a lot of other chemicals. It always surprises me when studies don’t take these things into consideration.

I’m drinking my morning coffee now! haha… I’ve gone through super “healthy” phases when I had green tea or just hot water with lemon in the morning but at some point I got over it. I love coffee and coffee loves me 🙂 I think the key is just not to drink too much or it can give you the shakes or make you feel gross. I am Canadian but live in Europe and it’s pretty rare to see people walking around drinking giant cups of coffee to go — no, let me rephrase that — I have actually NEVER seen that here. I imagine drinking it in that quantity can’t be good for your adrenals, but anything in a giant quantity like that isn’t great. I also think we have to be wary about what “causes cancer”.. I think certain coffee, like, full of GMO-s and sprayed with pesticides, surely can’t help, especially when consumed regularly and in combination with a highly processed diet and a lot of other things – but it’s a huge stretch to say that it causes cancer alone. It is useful to try and source quality coffee though, just like our food, and avoid drinking the cheap stuff. As a Canadian (who used to work there), Tim Hortons (maybe you’ve heard of it – it’s this disgusting coffee/donut chain) is SERIOUSLY popular for their coffee. Personally I think it’s awful, and I also discovered when I worked there as a teenager that they put MSG in it, which creates the brand loyalty they’re after.. and probably heartburn for a lot of people! Anyway… wasn’t expecting to have a huge rant! Just felt like sharing my thoughts. I appreciate your thoughts Zuzka, and your common sense approach to everything! I also really appreciate that you actually turn to real research rather than pseudo science to make your case (like so many people on the internet these days).

Well I am very happy to hear that since I love coffee so much! I have a cup everyday in the morning after my workout while getting ready to go to work. Then sometimes I have one after lunch because it just feels so good 😉

I drink a cup of the Bulletproof brand coffee every morning. As with anything, quality is key. Cheap coffee full of mold and pesticides can’t be good.
