The Truth About Fat

Health | June 22, 2014

Being a huge fan of low carb and high fat diet, I was super excited to see an article from Bryan Walsh in the Time Magazine. Here’s the skinny of the article:

Breads, cereals, pasta, and other starchy carbs have been the base of the USDA food pyramid since the 1980.  It was the same year when the U.S. government announced the results of a $150 million study – eating less fat results in decreasing the cholesterol levels and the risk of a heart attack.  The hate towards fat begun, but the food industry and manufacturers have shown  their creativity and flexibility. The stores got filled with low fat microwave dinners, yogurts, cookies, cheese, milk, and cereals.  Their message to the consumer was loud and clear. Fat was evil and our products have low or no fat, therefore their healthy. All they did was replacing fat with tons of carbs and low fat junk food.

Unfortunately for millions of Americans, this experiment was an obvious failure. Almost four decades later and Americans are sicker then ever by almost every measure. Type 2 diabetes increased by 166% from 1980 to 2012 and now nearly 1 out of 10 Americans suffers from this disease. Another 84 millions are estimated to be pre diabetic. Cardiovascular disease remains the number one killer, and more than third of the country is obese. New research suggests that it’s the high consumption of carbohydrates, sugar and artificial sweeteners that is mainly responsible for the epidemics of lifestyle diseases.

Studies by Dr. Eric Westman at the Duke’s University found that replacing carbs with fat could help manage and even reverse diabetes. High fat diet has been proven to be successful in treating epilepsy and more and more studies are now showing that Ketogenic diet might be the new anti-cancer diet that has the capability to starve the bad cancer cells, which can’t survive without glucose. An article about Dr. Fred Hatfield who survived a widespread metastatic cancer was published last year in CBN news.  Dr. Hatfield switched to Keto diet after doctors told him that he’s got only 3 months to live. Dr. Hatfield was literally shocked that the cancer was completely gone, and without any trace even a year later.

Low carb and Ketogenic diet are becoming more and more popular as we begin to realize what the real devil is. It’s unfortunate to be the generation that grew up on a high carb low fat diet, because getting off the sugar addiction is not an easy task. What keeps me on track with low carb and Keto diet is realizing, how lucky I am for being healthy and for not having to deal with any lifestyle or metabolic disease.

The sugar in fruits is fructose, which is even worse if you eat it in not natural form (in any form, which isn’t fruit) But in fruits it is ok, because of the fiber (I think it was the fiber) which are in the fruits and neutralizes bad effects.

Nicely pointed out but foods of the past is better than foods of today. People needs to change lifestyle to eat more efficient than gullibility today. Too much at rest will killed the humans race. Mass production of foods will be our down fall. Years will pass weaker and weaker your health will failed.

Zuzka. I’m so happy that you found a diet that works for you, but I greatly disagree. While we do need some healthy fats in our diets we do not need diets high in fat. The American heart association specifically warns against diets high in fat leading to heart disease. Any diet that makes you restrict your fruits and vegetables is ridiculous. I’m sorry I’ve never disagreed with any of your advice Zuzka but it is. We should never tell people to limit fruits and vegetables. They should be the staples In our diets….not fats…even if they are from healthy sources like avocados and nuts. All this disease you talk about the population having comes from diets high in dairy, meats, eggs, and processed foods. Milk alone has tons of hormones and chemicals in it that our bodies don’t need. Fruits and vegetables, of any kind, are not the culprit. If you were to take the majority of overweight people and ask them what their diets are, I bet they won’t say they live on fruits and vegetables. They’ll tell you that they are high fat diets. I’m sorry but I just feel like this post is only part of the story and leaves out so much. I still value your opinion and again I am happy you found a diet that works for you, but I don’t think this post is very accurate.

Yaaay I love you Brittany..lol. Finally I read a comment from someone who uses logic and critical thinking instead of being brainwashed and just following whatever they read or see everyone is doing. I like what you said,If you were to take the majority of overweight people and ask them what their diets are, I bet they won’t say they live on fruits and vegetables. They’ll tell you that they are high fat diets. I’m sorry but I just feel like this post is only part of the story and leaves out so much.” Absolutely they don’t live on fruits and vegetables. And come on, eating a baked/boiled potato or 1 cup brown rice or pasta or a slice of whole wheat bread won’t make you die from cancer but eating bunch of crackers and simple carb is a different story… High five! It’s about moderation + right choice.

Thanks Jewel. I was like am I the only one that thinks this post and this diet is lacking information and encouraging bad eating behaviors! Of course rice and potatoes won’t give you cancer, make you fat, or kill you. I personally believe a diet rich in vegetables and fruit (including potatoes and squash) will heal your body and give you the energy you need. Especially if you are an athlete. No top athlete can follow this diet. They need carbs to function and preform. I did track in high school, managed the women’s track team in college, and now teach fitness classes. Throughout my life when I needed to race or teach I wouldn’t load up on fat, I would load up on bananas, pasta (with low fat/low sodium sauce) or rice….not avocados or olives. The girls on the track team also didn’t load up on fat before their races they ate pasta and fruit.

I do agree with the ketogenic diet that we should definitely limit and/or eliminate if possible candies, pop, alcohol, and many processed foods from our diets…but that’s about it.

Also as far as high fat diets curing certain illnesses/diseases. There are tons of other examples of people living primarily on fruits and vegetables of all flavors and starchyness being cured also.

Ms. Brittany I am writing this not because I am trying to negate your opinion I am only stating my opinion on that when you look at other countries diet, that have stayed at real whole foods have less disease by population than the United States and that is including high fats that are healthy. There are vegetarians that thrive in health with that lifestyle and there are vegetarians that are still living with disease. With that said it is the person’s own journey to find what lifestyle fits for them that means being responsible for their life and health. Everyone is wired differently so the one diet fits all is wrong. Read with question and venture your own journey. Thank you for the informative post Zuzka and thank you for your opinion Ms. Brittany.

      Respectfully,

      Liz

        Liz,

That for the response. I don’t think fat is evil…I just think that our diet shouldn’t be made up of tons of fat. I think carbs like fruits and vegetables should be the staples in our diets. I do agree that everyone has their own journey and different diets work for different people. One of my best friends loves this diet and has seen great weightloss results with it, but I just don’t like it for my athletic performance or as a long term lifestyle that is sustainable.

I completely agree with you ladies! I am a trainer as well. It’s excessive processed food that is making people ill. Not fruits and veggies. Fruits contain natural sugars that our bodies know how to process, as well as fiber and anti oxidants. Sweet potatoes are an amazing source of fiber and vitamins, and certainly won’t give you cancer. I agree with the majority of advice Zuzana gives, and I don’t believe she was trying to tell people to stop eating potatoes, but hopefully people will not start removing natural foods essential for good health from their diets. 🙂

Also, as a trainer, I believe you know how much carbohydrates are important for athletes! It’s the best fuel you can give to your body in order to perform at your best in your trainings! What makes people fat is excessive eating of whatever. If you eat more calories than you consume, you will store the excessa as fat, be it fat, fruit, anything. Of course I know there are many other subtilities (hormones, glycemic index, salt, vitamins, etc) but if the only thing you focus on is your body fat percentage, than count your calories for a couple days. I know it’s not very fun to count and I know Zuzka doesn’t count, but believe me it’s really easy to overeat and you need to log your meals to understand why you don’t lose fat.

I hope the comment will be useful for someone!

thanks again Zuzka and all the community for the support!

I appreciate your comment, I can’t entirely agree. New research shows that fat is a far better source of energy for our body then carbs and simple sugars. It’s just that we all are used to high carb diets that’s why our body takes the energy from carbs. You can train your body to take all energy from fat which is way more healthier and provides with high energy levels without causing any fluctuation in your blood sugar levels like high carb diets do.

Low carb is not low vegetable. Read the time magazine article… Nobody is advocating a “high fat” diet.

I think the real devil is in chemical ingredients in our food and big portions on our plates. I think in all that we doing, we mustn’t go far from harmony. The problem is not in fat ketogenic diets or low. The problem is eat only fat or low fat food. All world know that the secret of our health was opend many many years ago – 1. is just eat 3 times in a day with balanced food on your plate and have a healthy snack between them and only if you feel hungry. 2. Look for calories on plate. 3. Water – i drink a glass when wake up and before sleep and a glass till 30 mins before eating. that’s all. 4. Just be active!

I think if every person on our planet do this – to find fat or unhealthy people will be real problem. 🙂

I’ve been a vegetarian for since 2003. However, during the last 2-3 years I’ve become a pescatarian and began to include fish into my diet. I did this for increased protein and healthy fat. I stumbled upon the ketogenic diet after you mentioned the bulletproof coffee in one of your videos.

Since then, I’ve been reading a lot of articles and watching tons of YouTube videos trying to learn what I can about that lifestyle. To say that the concepts of the ketogenic diet conflict with the many of my dietary beliefs would be putting it mildly. But! I am trying to keep an open mind. There seems to be something there that has some truths to it. One of the biggest resources I’ve found so far is a woman by the name of Stephanie (Business) Person. She’s has tons of YouTube videos on various aspects of the ketogenic diet. On Stephanie’s website, she writes about how she helped save her mother’s life after she was given only a few months to live because of a cancerous brain tumor. She credits the ketogenic diet for her mother’s seven year recovery.
