This Is How I Fast & Eat

Nutrition | July 16, 2021

Here’s the list of foods and supplements I mentioned in the video:

Spermidine Supplement

Pre-Biotic Fiber from Bulletproof Brand

Pre-Biotic Fiber from Garden of Life

(I have the Garden of Life, but I’m about to try the Bulletproof starting next week)

MCT oil (some brands have MCT oil with high C8 content – the most ketogenic molecule)

Bulletproof Coffee:

Cup of coffee (I drink decaf but that’s your choice), 1/2 tbsp grass-fed unsalted butter (Kerigold), 1/2 tbsp MCT oil.

My Fast Ritual Overview:

16/8 hour fast, I typically eat between 12pm-8pm but it can vary. Some days I fast longer hours and there can be also a day in the week when I extend my eating window or don’t fast.

I’m in Keto without even trying and this fast got me fully adapted. Because of that I can enjoy more carbs from my favourite fruits or have things like quinoa or sweet potatoes. My strength has not suffered the way it did in the past, so I’m finally reaping all the benefits I’ve been looking for.

I have found the 16/8 fast works really well for me as well(we eat early so I go from about 4:30 to 8:30 or 9 in the morning). Thanks for that reinforcement of the bulletproof not messing up the fast. I LOVE my bulletproof coffee in the morning! It all just makes sense to me since most of society doesn’t spend nearly enough time in a fasted state. Maybe it is me getting older but it definitely has gotten my appetite under control. I am 42 this year and have definitely noticed a few things of “getting older” but overall feel very good because of this lifestyle. I would like to cut more carbs out of my diet but haven’t found keto maintainable for myself. It is enough not being tempted to have something when I am getting a snack for the kids of an evening. 😬 Thanks for sharing your findings.

Also makes me wonder now…I should check my ketone levels. Maybe, like you, I am more in ketosis state than I think by being consistent in my intermittent fasting. 🤔

Thanks for sharing Zuzka. You know I’ve been doing keto and IF for several months but find it hard to stay in ketosis. Maybe something I’m eating is throwing me out. Keeping my carbs under 20 grams.
Could you share some of the foods you are eating? You mentioned breaking your fast with bone broth and bulletproof coffee, but curious what you’ve been eating.
I loved hearing the benefits you’ve had with 16/8 fasting. I like that my digestive system is feeling better, not as much bloating. I’m looking forward to becoming fat adapted and not struggling to stay in ketosis. However my goal is to feel better and be as healthy as I can as I age. So far so good.
Thank you Zuzka for all you do. I appreciate you 🤗💪

Usually it’s much easier to stay in Keto for people who have some good lean muscle mass and do high intensity workouts on a regular basis. The intense activity depletes all the glycogen and burns any carbs from food. And the intermittent fast helps a lot as well. The other thing is that you have to give your body energy from fat. That’s why the bulletproof coffee is so great. Caffeine on it’s own increases ketone levels significantly and so does the MCT oil. So if you give your body enough foods to create ketones than it will stop looking for glucose. The other thing is that too much protein can also be the reason why you’re having a hard time staying in Ketosis.

        Thank you Zuzka.
I will be watching my protein intake going forward, I recently increased the amount because I didn’t want to lose any muscle.
I do your workouts and have been for over 10years now! At 58 I feel great and most days I do the weekly schedule posted or switch it up depending on my energy level.
As always I will end by telling you “thank you and I appreciate you !”

Thanks for sharing. This was very useful. I h e been doing intermittent fasting too. Most day 14/10 and some days 12/12 fast. Working myself to 16/8 fast. I struggle with getting enough calories in the day. I workout in zgym everyday and I don’t want to eat less. I don’t gain muscle easily.

Thank you so much for this video Zuzka!!! It was really great and informative. WHAT?? Bulletproof coffee doesn’t break your fast?? I had read that you could only have black coffee (no thank you!!) so I was so happy to hear this 👍 I have been trying this out for the past couple months but this info is going to help a lot in refining how I do the fast. Thanks again Zuzka 😁

Thank you for sharing this. I too would love to know more of the foods / recipes you eat throughout a week.
I don’t drink coffee, so is there an alternative like tea with grass fed butter and mct oil / almond milk or cream?

You can have the butter and MCT with Matcha tea, but not the almond milk.

Do you do the full tablespoon of prebiotic fiber? Before or after your bulletproof coffee? When do you workout?

It literally doesn’t matter. Sometimes I have the fiber before my coffee sometimes after. Sometimes I workout on an empty stomach, sometimes I workout later in the day.

Research shows actually that fasting by having your last meal of the day very early and not skipping breakfast might have some health benefits. I sincerely hope people will hear the most important message you shared in the video, namely the bio-individuality. This is what works for you, but women should be really careful when they do intermittent fasting, especially combined with a low carb diet. For me, low carb + skipping breakfast resulted in loss of my period (and I am a nutritionist) :/

Yes, I think there is a reason most of the books on IF are written by men : ). Its so much easier for them to incorporate IF and keto. I think its a harsh way of eating for most women. Probably 12 to 14 hour fast would be better and make sure plenty of carbs (and calories) are eaten during the day. And take a break from fasting couple of times per week too. Otherwise the hormonal mess women can get themselves into could get ugly. Its ok to talk about the benefits of IF and keto – there clearly are some but as with everything it has con side too.

So true Eli and Katka. I’m really glad Zuzka always mentions bio-individuality.

I attended a 4 part “Women’s Health Series” a few weeks ago conducted by a lady who’s a Medical Exercise Specialist and Functional Diagnostic Nutritionist. She mentioned that a lot of the clients she sees are on IF or Keto and dealing with hormonal issues-imbalances /fatigue/weight gain – struggling to lose weight despite exercising/infertility/brain fog etc. What was interesting is that she said originally her clients noticed great results, weight loss etc. But things changed after a while. In an effort to rebalance their hormones and get them back on track she gets them to eat more regular balanced meals. And they notice a remarkable difference when they start eating a “regular eating pattern”.

She wanted to make it abundantly clear that she is NOT against IF or Keto and in fact recommends it in some cases but wanted to make sure that women knew key things which I noted in my journal and listed below:

      1) Listen to our bodies and the clues it gives us and not try to “punish” our bodies into certain styles of lifestyles.
      2) Be flexible and realize that sometimes what worked for our body last year may not necessarily work today especially if there are external factors involved – stress, etc.
      3) After 2020 and the stress we’ve been under – we have to treat our bodies with care and be mindful of the additional stressors we are adding in the form of exercise/workout choices and dieting.
      4) Every woman needs to get frequent (annual) extensive hormonal blood panels done because externally we might look strong and healthy and maybe even achieve our goal weight but internally might be a different story which often show up later.

I wish we didn’t have the added stress of worrying about our hormones on top of everything else. lol

I’ve tried 16/8 for the past couple of weeks, after I’ve been reading about it in M.Greger’s book “How not to Diet” and after you talked about it in your last video. Surprisingly I don’t really have an issue with NOT eating for 16 hours, but I’m struggling a bit with eating all my meals in just 8h – I don’t really wanna skip a meal, so I’m still trying to pack 3 meals and maybe a smoothie into the 8 hours.
It’s a bit hard sometimes for me to plan the eating around the daily live – like I can’t eat right before/after working out for example. Often my exercise window and the end of my “eating window” overlap :/

So I was wondering: have you experimented with other fasting times, like 15/9 or 14/10? If yes, did you notice anything compared to 16/8?…….

And I was wondering, how you eat? Like 3 meals or 2 meals and a snack or 2 meals….?

PS: the image Link to the book you’re talking about at 2:58 in the video is not working. It’s showing up as “missing file”. In case you want to fix it and re-upload the video.

I’ve been having bone broth for breakfast for a while now, and I love it! AND it doesn’t have to be expensive! 😊 I get beef knuckle bones from the local butcher: for $5-6 (USD) I get enough bones to make TWO huge batches of broth. A single batch fills up a large crockpot and lasts for a week or 2 (you can freeze it). Cooking is easy, because you just leave it in the crockpot for 1.5-2 days (I put in garlic, ginger, and fresh herbs to cook, too). I just finished another batch the other day…it gets all hard and jiggly once it cools down, but tastes perfect when you heat it back up! 🤤
