Ugh, this is totally a favorite!! I surfed for 3 hours today and I’m giving massage later tonight, so I wanted a more lower body focused workout. I just modified it by doing kettlebell swings with my 45 lbs kb instead of pull ups and push ups. I used my 50 lbs sandbag for the deadlifts and did back squats. I wore 5 lbs ankle weights on each leg. Finished in 14:50!

Zuzka,
Thank you for the pistol squat modifications and encouragement!
I have always struggled with these due to lack of ankle and hip flexibility. I normally just to single leg prisoner squats instead. Today I did it with the modifications and I know that, one day, I will get there. I am also working on the mobility drills and focusing on flexibility lately, thanks to you!
I’m sorry that your heart is hurting. Losing a pet is so hard. Best to you and Jesse.

I found this workout to be one of the most discouraging workouts I have ever “completed”. I have been working out consistently, pushing myself beyond my limits, losing weight, and building strength for six years, but I still CANNOT do a pistol squat. I can’t even lower myself beyond 90 degrees. I just can’t do it. I squat, lunge, use the power band, hike, climb stairs, but I’m still flabby and unable to do the pistol squat. I was literally in tears during and after this workout. What’s the point? I haven’t grown at all!

Brynne, I’ve been following these workouts for years and could never do a pistol squat and I did not understand why. I’ve been focusing more on hip mobility and now I can finally do them. It didn’t have anything to do with strength, as much as it had to do with the ligament flexibility, especially in the knees (which was caused by the hip inflexibility).

I hear you Brynne. Siah makes a good point. I could not do it as well as Zuzka can despite training hard. Some of the problem is flexibilty and balance. Some of it is bone structure too. I have not been able to keep my form for pistol squats as well as before this workout and do feel that I have gone backwards. The problem could be medical as it is in my case. Do not give up hope but do not cause yourself an injury either. We do have our limits. It took me a long time to figure out that my main problem is my bone structure that can prevent me from fully squating, doing the splits, and as you mentioned, an appropriate pistol squat. If your hips hurt when you do the workouts that require hip flexiblity and strength, it may be time to get yourself seen by a medical provider. The problem is more common than you think and prominent in athletes. I think Z has mentioned it on the blog about “Dancer’s hip” syndrome. It is worth a read and further research.

17:45! I’m very happy because this is the first time I’ve ever incorporated jump lunges into a workout! I used to find them very hard but I guess I’ve been getting stronger and better at them 🙂 I managed to do them for about half of the rounds and did walking lunges for the rest. This wasn’t a hard workout for me but I definitely sweated a lot. And since I did it first thing in the morning, it put me in a good mood for the whole rest of the day 🙂 Thank you Zuzka!

I decided to do this one today. Phew! Same as last time, I did this with 5 lbs ankle weights and a 45 lbs KB. I did goblet sumo squats the second round for the deadlift/squat combo. I managed to do all the pull ups from deadhang the first round, but not the second. I finished in 13:44!

Good Christmas day workout Z! You said in the workout that “we have more strength than we think, dig deeper.” Well I want to dig a little deeper and wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a happy and injury free New Year.
Scott, that shout is for you too!
