Really enjoyed this! One of my goals for this year is to improve my pistols.

So disappointed because pistol squats are not accessible to me. Kinda did my own version but it wasn’t pretty.

Did this one as a second workout. I can see why it’s not an X because there are no consecutive pistols on the same leg so I didn’t get too much muscle fatigue, and the intensity was lowered with the rows and presses. It’s only intermediate for those who can already do pistols though, as it can’t easily be modified. Loved it!

I loved this workout! My left hip always feels so much weaker when doing pistols! Any tips or mobility drills you can suggest, Zuzka?

Super fun workout. 2 rounds in 14:22. 26lb for the rows and presses and used a 10lb weight to counterbalance me in the last exercise.

I am new to ZGYM but have followed Zuzka on YouTube workouts and I have a few dvds. I would consider myself intermediate to advanced but for the life of me cannot do a pistol squat. I can’t even get in the starting position without going on my toes and trying to lift up is impossible. Any tips or exercises to strengthen a certain area would be appreciated. Forever trying…Sarah x

Hi! Welcome to ZGYM. If you’re an intermediate and your heel is coming off the ground, then it’s not about strength, but lack of mobility. You are most likely missing mobility in your ankles knees or hips (or combination of all). Can you bring your heels all the way to the ground when doing downward dog with your legs straight?

Hi. Thanks for your reply. Actually I managed to do a couple after practice last night. Struggling again this morning but will keep practicing. Yes I can put my heels on the floor in downward dog. I am bottom heavy with quite a large butt which probably doesn’t help.

Hmmm think I need to practice a full squat without falling on my bottom first. I’ll keep trying.

Similar story. I’ve done her DVDs & YouTube workouts. I consider myself intermediate as well. Just joined Zgym about 2months now and I cannot do even one pistol.

Try holding onto a dumbbell. I just managed one and this helps somehow

Sara, I’ve tried that, I even practice assisted pistols using the TRX straps, I stretch daily, I’ve tried just about every pistol squat “practice routines” and tutorials on youtube. I don’t think my body wants to pistol lol Thanks for the suggestion. Will keep trying.

I am advanced, I’ve been working out for almost 20 years and was a fitness instructor for 15 (teaching everything from pilates to body combat and body pump) and I still can’t do unassisted pistol. I think it’s just not meant to be for some people. I always do the version on a chair.

my experience tends to lead to same. Bone structure is component not much spoken. Only one person I read was referring to depth of hip sockets (I really feel mine very deep). In baby pose (laying on back and holding thighs close to chest), I am very far away from getting knees into armpits.Feels a dead-end that no stretching will ever manage.
as for ankle mobility, I gained a little, but some say it is bone structure too.
So I modify, adapt and just do my thing with the body I have.

Thanks for sharing that Aleola. I’ve been working out about 15years and was a personal trainer for about 8years and yea I don’t think they’re in the cards for me. I’m ok doing assisted as well, I’d rather not have an injury.

Like the others, tried and could get a Sorta Pistol with crappy form, tried holding on to pull band to help but still struggled again crappy (non existent form), guess I just have to get stronger-definitely didn’t think it was an intermediate program. Ended up just doing competition burpees when the pistols showed up in the second round. Love working with you and will keep
    Trying.
