DIY Exfoliating Skin Care Scrub
Fashion & Beauty | April 30, 2015
I really like to experiment with DIY recipes for skin care because some products on the market can be unnecessarily expensive especially some “all-natural” ones because a lot of times the active ingredients can be found in your own pantry. I made this coffee exfoliating scrub recently and I really like it so I wanted to share with you guys. It’s really simple, there are only 4 ingredients: coffee, coconut oil, brown sugar and sea salt.
Ingredients:
4 Tbsp ground coffee
4 Tbsp brown sugar
2 Tbsp Coconut Oil
1 Tbsp sea salt
All you have to do is grind the coffee and mix together the ingredients. I have a coffee grinder because I typically buy whole beans and grind it myself for fresh coffee but if you don’t have one you just use any coffee you have. The more coarse the coffee is, the more effective it is at exfoliating and removing dead skin. It’s easiest to use coconut oil that is at room temperature, more liquid form, so it’s soft and easy to mix. The amount I made with the ingredients above was enough to use for your whole body at 1 time. You could also double or triple the amounts and make some to store in a mason jar and store it in your bathroom closet for future use.
The most important element of this scrub I think is the coconut oil. Coconut oil is really good for moisturizing, not only your skin but your hair. Sometimes I like to just use plain coconut and let it set in my hair for a few minutes while I’m in the shower before I rinse it out and use my shampoo and conditioner, it helps my hair feel soft and smooth and healthy.
This coffee scrub is quite messy so I recommend taking it into the bathtub or shower with you, rubbing it on your skin and letting it sit for a 5-7 minutes before rinsing it away. Plus, I personally like the smell of it BUT it did kind of make me feel like I had spent the day working as a coffee barista and then I went to the tanning salon. The coffee and coconut oil together remind me of tanning lotion a little bit?! I did like how my skin felt after though, very healthy and soft. I don’t know about you but I feel refreshed after a good scrub. Do any of you guys have DIY skin care recipes you want to share with me? If you try this one, let me know what you think 🙂

Yeaaah ! I love trying homemade beauty recipes 😀
Usually, I use ground coffee, olive oil, salt and half of a lemon juice as a body scrub, it helps with blood circulation and it leaves the skin really hydrated !
For the face, I usually use brown sugar, salt and olive oil or coconut oil ! But I’m gonna try your recipe tonight, I’ve never left it on the skin so I’ll let you know 😀 thank you very much !!! I love you :*

Nothing can beat a good coffee scrub) I also add few drops of grapefruit oil to the mix and take it to the shower, it’s great for cellulite

Is decaf okay? I have some in my pantry that is just sitting there (because I of course I like my caffeine 🙂 ) It would be a shame to watch my regular coffee wash down the drain lol!! My precious…. haha

haha your precious:) I think decaf would work as an exfoliator too, but i read somewhere that caffeine is good for reducing the appearance of cellulite so I guess it depends what you want it use it for.

A great natural deodorant that I use is 1Tbsp baking soda, 2Tbsp coconut oil and 3Tbsp arrowroot powder (potato starch or corn starch). It totally works and doesn’t have all that other nasty crap in it. I make sure my ingredients are organic and GMO free.

Hi Zoe 🙂 This sounds great! I try using all natural products too. How would you put this on? Just rub it in?
Private Member |
Yes! Its a bit clumpy and will turn hard in a cold room due to the coconut oil but just press a little bit on your armpit until it’s soft enough to rub on. Just be careful because sometimes the white residue will get on your clothes. I try to put it on after I get dressed so it doesn’t happen as much.

OH! I use this scrub (minus the salt…NOW I’m going to have to try it with the salt!) for my face when I shower! I LOVE how soft it makes me feel! Just be careful that it doesn’t make the shower slippery when washing it off.
While this isn’t a face scrub — but still shower-related (I suppose maybe it could be used in a scrub?)– I’ve found that preparing tea (particularly chamomile) then pouring it over my hair after I wash it does wonders! It’s SO silky and shiny the next day (I wash my hair at night). So simple, too!

Can you use the leftover coffee grounds from the filter in the coffee maker after you make a cup of coffee?

Hey, that´s a great idea!!! Why should it not work?

That’s what I use, LOL. Works great.

And after washing and the scrub, I take quick splash of cold water, and then while wet, I quickly rub all over body almond oil with few drops of grapefruit oil. That way it does not take much oil, and it spreads as easy as body wash. Pat dry with towel, and my skin feels like a baby’s butt. It does not leave me greasy at all.

I just tried this and loved it!! I didn’t expect my skin to feel so silky smooth from the coconut oil. Thanks Zuzka! By the way, you were right it is a bit messy, but totally worth it.

Oh, I love self made scrubs! I’ll try it tonight, thank you Zuzka! 😀
I totally love that you’re always on the natural side, so I’m really looking forward to hearing from your beauty pills!
Here is an idea for another scrub that I’ve used over the last couple of months, every time when those nasty face demons start to show (when I get my period). 🙁
1 tbsp ground nutmeg
1 tbsp baking powder
1 tbsp regular salt or sea salt
a pinch of ground cinnamon
(lasts for a couple of treatments if stored in a dry place)
The combination of nutmeg and cinnamon reminds me of Christmas, since it has an incredibly awesome scent to it! *w* But it also works as a gentle exfoliator and removes dead skin cells. You might want to be careful about the cinnamon, some people might react to it strongly and it can cause irritation, especially when applied topically.
Baking soda also has an exfoliating effect and is amphoteric, hence it can react as a base or an acid and is ph-neutralizing. It’s also antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, exfoliating, and can help soothing the irritation caused by acne inflammations.
Partially the same goes for salt: It’s exfoliating and antiseptic, it relaxes the skin and increases blood irculation.

This is a neat recipe, I totally agree that so many products are easily found at home and can be combined for a ton of different exfoliants. I love using sea salt, or oatmeal in my scrubs.
Zuzka, I do have a question for you (and all you WarriorZ) Do you have any recommendations for stretch marks on your hips/glutes??? I love that they are growing larger…..but HATE that it comes at the price of stretch marks 🙁 I try to keep the area well oiled after showers w/ vit E but it’s just not enough. My frame is petite and I guess the skin just can’t keep up…..
