DIY Pumpkin Enzyme Facial Peel!

We’ve all heard of homemade food masks that hydrate or help heal imperfections, I’ve experimented with many in the past. But did you know that you there’s a mask that will smooth fine lines and reduce pigmentation? It’s called an enzyme peel and you can make one at home that really works! Inspired by all the coffee shop signs everywhere for pumpkin spice lattes, I’ve got a great recipe for one using this season’s favorite, PUMPKIN!

Firstly, What’s An Enzyme Peel?

Mother earth is an incredible lady. It turns out that fruits have naturally occurring enzymes that will eat ugly stuff right off your face and leave behind a fresh layer of new skin. Enzymes are these cool, smart little guys that break down stuff. If you eat them, they break down protein and fat in your belly so your body can use them. If you put them on your face, they will eat away at the old, dead skin cells. To learn more about enzymes and skin cells, check out this in depth article from LiveStrong.

At fancy spas, peels are often done with harsh chemicals. But the enzymes in fruit are gentler, safe, effective, and much more affordable. And I like to avoid harsh chemicals whenever possible. When old skin cells collect on your face, they can make your skin look dull and clog your pores. When you remove the dead skin with the peel, your skin will look plumper and smoother. A peel can even lighten dark spots or acne scars, smooth fine lines, and give your face a youthful glow.

Sounds great, right? So, how do we make this miracle mask?

With all the hype at coffee shops this season over pumpkin spice lattes I was inspired to find one using pumpkin! One homemade recipe I’ve tried and liked used pumpkin, papaya, and an egg. You can go the easy route and just buy canned, pureed pumpkin OR you can really make this a project and skin, steam, and puree one yourself. There are certainly a lot around this time of year! And if you’re unfamiliar with papaya, check out this article for some quick info on the fruit and how to prepare one.

(If you have sensitive skin, try out a little patch first to make sure the mask does’t irritate your skin.)

Recipe:
1 cup pureed pumpkin
1 papaya, peeled and seeded
1 egg

Put all the ingredients in a high speed blender, like a Vitamix, and blend until smooth. Smooth the mixture over your face avoiding your mouth and eye skin. Discard the rest of the mask, as it won’t keep. The mask should tingle.  When it stops tingling, usually after about 10 minutes, wipe it of with a warm wash cloth and hydrate your face with moisturizer.

A peel can make your face extra sensitive to the sun, so try to stay out of it immediately following the peel.

I would love to hear what you think of the peel! Try it out and let me know how you feel after… anyone else have good enzyme peel recipes to share with the community, leave it in the comment section below 🙂

Isn’t fall the best?!

Great! I made this wonderful pumpkin bread today (definitely an earned meal) and I have leftover pumpkin puree! So when I’m out I’ll pick up a papaya and give it a try. Thanks for sharing 🙂

I think Paw Paw is the same kind as papaya. You can look for that.

Maybe try pineapple? I’m not sure it will work the same, but pineapple has an enzyme called bromelain in it, so it might work. Hope this helps! 🙂

I just found this recipe!! It sounds great and I wanna try it. But I want to know if the pumpkin that you used is the orange one, like halloween pumpkins? They are not common in my country and I don’t know if its okay to use other kind of pumpkins. Thanks!!
