My Beauty Routine - Oil Pulling and More Discussed in the Latest Coffee Talk Video!
Fashion & Beauty | July 21, 2015
I get a lot of questions from people asking what I do for beauty routines and so I did a short video demonstrating some of my habits and things I’ve tried recently. I had a good laugh shooting this so I hope you like it too 🙂
I’ve read comments from you guys asking if I’ve ever heard about or done Oil Pulling and the answer is yes, I’ve been doing it for a while and I think it’s great. If you haven’t done it yet you should try it. You’re going to want to do it consistently for at least 10 days to really see and feel a difference I think. I get compliments about how healthy my gums look and I attribute it to this routine.
Oil Pulling – just 15-20 minutes a day (while you’re watching tv or reading). When you’re done spit it in your garbage (won’t clog your sink).
Benefits of oil pulling –
- Gets rid of plaque and bad bacteria in your mouth
- Helps with stinky breath
- Inflammation in your gums
Thrive Market is doing a promo right now where new customers can get a free 15 oz jar of jar of coconut oil. All you can to do it pay $1.95 shipping (you also get a free 30-day membership and a $15 gift card towards a future purchase). If you’re already a member though don’t worry because existing members can just receive 10% off and get a new jar of coconut oil for super cheap still.
Gentle Exfoliation – I use a soft facial brush to gently scrub my face every day. (mine is vitagoods)
Benefits of facial exfoliation –
- Helps shrink pores
- Gets rid of blackheads
- Improved blood circulation
Mud mask – I do this about twice a week (the one I like is ellavage). Cover your face, let it dry for about 10 minutes then rinse with warm water
- Contains vitamins, minerals, fatty and amino acids
- Helps soften skin to give it a more youthful appearance
- Contains acai extract that helps even out skin tones
Botanical wraps – watch the video to watch how my experience went. It was fun to do and smelled really good, it left my skin feeling smooth and hydrated but truthfully I don’t believe it does anything for changing your body composition. If you want to check it out yourself, these are the wraps I used.

I couldn´t stop laughing!!! it´s so cute video!!! I already pre-ordered your book Zuzi and can´t wait on February!!
I have something I would like to share with you all. I know Zuzka that this is a part of your life which is already over you but maybe somebody can help me. In January I wrote to Watch It Now to cancel my membership and for refunding. Money came back to my account and I thought it was solved…Today I checked my account ´cause I was missing some money and I found out that they withdraw my money again for 6month membership…are they kidding me??? I resent them the history of email from January and asked them again do it.. how did you cancel it? Thanks a lot!!

Hi Petra,
I’m so sorry for what Watch It Now did and is doing. I can’t believe they are still charging people. You can contact your bank and cancel the charges and tell them you did not authorize the payment. Your bank will also cancel the recurring future payments.I think Watch It Now is a company with no integrity and I’m so relieved that I don’t have any business with them, and that I have a complete control over my company and website.
Thank you for your support through out the years and I hope you will like my new book 🙂

Thanks for sharing about swishing with the coconut oil. I’ve been recently working on switching out my beauty products with non-toxics.
I love the mask I use: I use pure bentonite clay I buy off Amazon. I mix it with raw apple cider vinegar…and it’s incredible. It’s low cost plus all natural!

I remember trying oil pulling and had forgotting about it, I found it difficult to swish during ten-ish minutes…I can’t imagine doing it 20 min. The review of the wrap looks to be a joke too, trying this on Zuzka who has no fat to loose and only once is really not representative of anything.

I floss then oil pull every day for at least 10 minutes using pure organic sesame oil (NOT toasted!), which is said to be better than coconut oil for reducing levels of bacteria – http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/03/12/oil-pulling_n_4943808.html
I then swish warm water mixed with salt to get rid of the oil residue, and then brush my teeth for at least 2 minutes and also use Dr. Tung’s tongue cleaner. My gums have never been so pink and my teeth so white. It’s been a game changer for me.
Instead of commercialized face washes, I use oils to wash my face at night. I love rosehip oil and sometimes add in essential oils that are effective at getting rid of acne/acne scarring (such as rosemary, oregano, and tea tree oil). I rub it gently onto my skin and neck for a couple minutes and wash it off with slightly-warmer-than-warm water, and then use witch hazel or rose water to moisturize and tone.
I also use a mixture of bentonite clay and unpasteurized apple cider vinegar as a face mask at least once every week. Sometimes I add pure aloe and/or activated charcoal for extra skin goodness. It’s helped with acne scars, pores, and overall skin tone. I feel like a tropical goddess after my face mask. My skin glows.
I’ve gradually switched to more natural ingredients for skin and health over the past couple years and it feels so good to not have a million different expensive bottles of chemical-filled products. As long as I have my oils, bentonite clay, apple cider vinegar, and rose water, I’m good 🙂 Coupled with a diet that includes a lot of greens and veggies and regular exercise, I’ve never felt better in my life.

Hey Maria! Could you tell me a little more about your betonite mask? I read on amazon that the clay is for ingesting; do you do that as well? I would like to try the mask based on your awesome review here! What brand do you buy?

Hi Paula 🙂 I really love Wellness Mama as a resource for natural beauty/health info: http://wellnessmama.com/5915/benefits-of-healing-clays/
That article explains how bentonite clay works and lists several uses. I’ve never ingested it myself but I hear that it’s safe and helps “detoxify” your system a bit; activated charcoal is great for that as well. I’ve only bought this brand on amazon and you can get either 1 lb or 2 lb for pretty cheap! I got the 2 lb one and it’s lasting forever: http://www.amazon.com/Indian-Healing-Clay-Aztec-Secret/dp/B00N528HIC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1438447820&sr=8-1&keywords=bentonite+clay
It helps fade scarring and is amazing for removing blackheads. I’ve been using it for about a year now and I look forward to my weekly face mask (you may use it more or less depending on your skin). You can definitely use distilled water but I recommend mixing it with apple cider vinegar; the combination is magical. I hope you enjoy it as well, I highly recommend it for everyone. 🙂

Thanks Maria! That’s some very good information. I was looking into it on my own too, and the Aztec Secret mask kept coming up on every forum. I am glad you also say it’s the best, because that’s what everyone seems to agree on this 🙂 Unfortunately the brand doesn’t ship to my EU country. Do you happen to know if (and where) I can buy it in a store in the US? I have a trip to San Diego coming up soon and I’d like to maybe check Whole Foods or similar. Thank you so much for your help in advance, I’m really glad you brought my attention to this! 😀

You’re so welcome Paula! I’m glad I can spread the word about it.
Oh no, I’m sorry it doesn’t ship to you! You should get the 2 lb one or a couple of the 1 lb to hold you over for a while. It’s definitely at Whole Foods and seems to be at Walgreens as well. You can look up the product on Walgreen’s website and check to see if it’s available at the nearest one where you’re staying in San Diego; I would check their price against Whole Foods because WF can be overly expensive sometimes. Have fun in America and I hope you can find the clay! <3

Ok so, I got the clay by a different company, and I’ve used it twice, and my skin looked AH-MAZING afterward. Maybe I’m delusional but then people gave me nice compliments on how fresh my skin looks 🙂 THANK YOU Maria! I’m looking forward to using this regularly! I hope other people read our little thread and buy this stuff too!

It’s probably the same exact thing anyways! And right?! It makes my skin glow 🙂 And the longer you use it the more the benefits show. So happy you feel the same way, and you’re more than welcome!

Hi Zuzka…nice topic to talk about beauty tips. I will try the oil pulling, have never heard about it before but it sounds interesting. Also mud mask I will start doing that I know it is very good for skin. My skin care is just applying moisturizer daily after bath on whole body and face and also use wrinkles cream at night and day. Sunblock creams during the day. I have never tried any other stuff but I love creams. You and Jesse are funny! See u, take care.
