Giveupitis
Fitness | July 29, 2015
Some of you are quite aware of this sad, sometimes chronic condition and, if we’re being honest, all of us have suffered from this strange and terrible disease known as giveupitis. The symptoms of giveupitis include quiting before we’ve reached our goals, our limits and, most importantly, our potential.
Giveupitis is a quitter’s disease. It seductively soothes us when we’re most exhausted, tired and done with the day by whispering just above a whisper inside our heads to give up, to quit, to not finish what we’ve started. It preys on our fatigue and laziness and allows us to chase comfort rather than the things vital for our growth inside and out.
The other often more dangerous symptom of giveupitis is it’s infamous ability to let us endlessly procrastinate. Not quite feeling up to hitting the ZGYM today? “That’s okay,” it tells you. “Just do it tomorrow or the next day.” Pretty soon weeks even months have gone by and your health and fitness goals are nowhere in sight anymore.
Strangely, giveupitis often shows up the closer we are to reaching our goals rather than when we’ve just begun our fitness journeys. Heck, even marathon runners complain that running becomes all the harder as they near the finish line because of all the fatigue coupled with anticipation and expectations.
The same is true when you find yourself at the end of one my workouts. It’s easy to start slowing down, missing reps and getting plain lazy even though the workout is not over. This is where I need you to really push yourselves even harder and not fall victim to giveupitis! 99% of the time the fatigue, the desire to give up is all in your head. Your body is doing just fine, but it’s your mind that wants to quit. Coaches always insist to their athletes that if you’re not careful, your mind will quit much sooner than your body. That logic is just as true for us warriorz!

I follow your workouts for 5 years now (bodyrock and then followed you to the ZWOW life). I bought DVD’s from you and have to say that your workouts are my favorite workouts. You are so truly inspiring and they workouts are simply amazing. Unfortunately I was sick for the past 5 weeks, so sick, that I was unable to workout. I feel like bouncing off the wall and can’t wait to finally get the okay again to finally start working out again. Giveupitis does exist in my life and I have to fight it at some points but it never really gets to me when it comes down to working out. I believe that you have a lot to do with that too, as you are very motivating and I love that you actually pull through the workout “with us” and you don’t just stand there and give orders. It’s something I really like.
Keep it up Zuzka and thanks for your positive energy!

Ooooh! That third round! This is my head talking after the first: Already the second round?, “yes! Ok! Let’s do it”. But then that third round! “Really Zuzka?” I’m dying here! I think it’s ok if I just do two round, just today, it is not like I have done nothing really, I did two rounds…, don’t you think??? Then this comes: “the best shape of my life!” For my little one, for my family, for myself! Let’s do it warriors!!

Hi Zuzka! This is my first comment here. 🙂 This topic is really interesting for me, since I am a victim of giveupitis often. I joined Zgym recently but I’ve been following you since 2013. In the meantime I ran a half marathon so I know what you’re talking about! I see how you are happy when the woorkout is tough and I’m jealous of that! 😀 I seldom feel happy when I see that something is too hard for me. I’m happy when it’s over, when I reach the finish line. But, during the process my mind is always telling me to quit, to stop, to slow down… I promised myself that Zgym is going to change that, and I hope that now I won’t quit!
xoxo, Alexah 🙂

I am currently experiencing giveupitis. I am usually very strict with my workouts and eating habits but as of late I have fallen of the wagon completely. As Z mentioned, it can hit when we are near our goals, and that is exactly what happened to me! I am in the best shape of my life and could see my abs for the first time in two years as I was pregnant and my baby is now 10 months old. However, I stopped one day due to tiredness and a busy schedule with having three sons, and just could never talk myself into another workout since. I have slowly watched my abs disappear and my jeans have gotten tighter recently. Today I watched z workout and then read this article and have decided to beat the giveupitis disease! I am starting again today and my reason is to be healthy and strong so I can keep up with my children as I grow older (I am 33). Thanks for the motivation Z! Love you!

I have been suffering from giveupitis since May. I haven’t worked out at all!!!!! Lots of excuses, no good reasons!!!!!!! And the depression and self-“hatred” that come with giveupitis are tremendous!!!! I’ve only gained 2 lbs. I tell myself….but in reality it’s what I’ve lost that’s detrimental!! I’ve lost confidence, strength, muscle and most importantly the feeling of accomplishment!!! I’d probably be at my goal by now if I hadn’t given up, it’s my own fault. I can blame my flooded basement home gym for only so long. I can blame the fact that my husband is home on injured leave from his job and is constantly bringing home junk food that tempts me, but I cannot blame him for stuffing it in down my neckhole; because no one is forcing me to eat it!!!! Well…I got a recent email from you and I saw your new 15 min. fat burning series and it’s just what the doctor ordered!!!!! It’s my prescription for giveupitis!!!! Thanks Dr. Z!!!!!!!! 😉
