Giveupitis
Fitness | July 29, 2015
Some of you are quite aware of this sad, sometimes chronic condition and, if we’re being honest, all of us have suffered from this strange and terrible disease known as giveupitis. The symptoms of giveupitis include quiting before we’ve reached our goals, our limits and, most importantly, our potential.
Giveupitis is a quitter’s disease. It seductively soothes us when we’re most exhausted, tired and done with the day by whispering just above a whisper inside our heads to give up, to quit, to not finish what we’ve started. It preys on our fatigue and laziness and allows us to chase comfort rather than the things vital for our growth inside and out.
The other often more dangerous symptom of giveupitis is it’s infamous ability to let us endlessly procrastinate. Not quite feeling up to hitting the ZGYM today? “That’s okay,” it tells you. “Just do it tomorrow or the next day.” Pretty soon weeks even months have gone by and your health and fitness goals are nowhere in sight anymore.
Strangely, giveupitis often shows up the closer we are to reaching our goals rather than when we’ve just begun our fitness journeys. Heck, even marathon runners complain that running becomes all the harder as they near the finish line because of all the fatigue coupled with anticipation and expectations.
The same is true when you find yourself at the end of one my workouts. It’s easy to start slowing down, missing reps and getting plain lazy even though the workout is not over. This is where I need you to really push yourselves even harder and not fall victim to giveupitis! 99% of the time the fatigue, the desire to give up is all in your head. Your body is doing just fine, but it’s your mind that wants to quit. Coaches always insist to their athletes that if you’re not careful, your mind will quit much sooner than your body. That logic is just as true for us warriorz!

Yes, I have a serious case of giveupitis. It happened near the end of the summer shred series. The workouts were longer than usual so I couldn’t fit them into my lunch break. So I thought I would do them in the evening after work, and that didn’t happen. Then there was a terrible heat wave in France, I know, excuses, excuses. So this week I’ve gotten back into the swing of things, but I feel bad. I had lost so much belly fat and it’s all back again. I totally agree that I seem to give up when I am so close to my goals. Thank you for this article, and thank you for all that you do Zuzka!

Love this post its so true for workouts that are hard and I am tired (not enough sleep or chronically sleep deprived). There is always that urge of slowing down, but I usually knock it in the back of my head!… I honestly thought this was a medical condition for a minute there when I first started reading it, clever name :).

I really needed this today, thank you, Zu, for the reminder that I really do want to achieve my goals and giving up before then is not an option.

LOL:) Funny name and how cute is the dog on the pic? And yes, I suffer from this condition, in fact its a chronic state of mine. Maybe its normal? You know, mother nature’s way of making sure we dont run out of steam completely and die. Just my theory.

I’m a new member of Zgym and love your workouts. I too suffer from “giveupitis” almost every morning when convincing myself to roll out of bed to exercise. 🙂 When it comes to my fitness goals I recite a quote I heard over 35 years ago while I was getting ready to compete in a high school regional gymnastics competition: “The will to win is far less important than the will to PREPARE to win.” I’m working on getting stronger and healthier every day by making myself workout with you Z… And if a 51 year old can do it, anyone can! Don’t give up warriors 🙂

Who’s doggie is this? Cute! We all give up on things. Sometimes it’s something like a friend others it’s some specific exercise like pull-ups.

Hahahahah…I thought that was the name of the dog! Hahahahah you are funny Zu! I have never heard about his disease with strange name but I do not suffer from this and I will never suffer also! Give up is not a word that figures in my dictionary…I believe in keep on trying till you get something or reach somewhere. Never give up! 🙂

I of course have my ‘just give it up’ moments. But I remember where I was when I started my journey and where I am going. If that doesn’t give me the nudge I write what is going on. I have a small fitness journal I jot my daily workouts in and thoughts/events that feel important (sometimes not important but I feel they should be said). This has helped me push forward. The only time I have skipped a workout is when I am flat out exhausted to where I can barely keep my eyes open and stand, no injuries please 🙂
