Giveupitis

Giveupitis

Some of you are quite aware of this sad, sometimes chronic condition and, if we’re being honest, all of us have suffered from this strange and terrible disease known as giveupitis. The symptoms of giveupitis include quiting before we’ve reached our goals, our limits and, most importantly, our potential.

Giveupitis is a quitter’s disease. It seductively soothes us when we’re most exhausted, tired and done with the day by whispering just above a whisper inside our heads to give up, to quit, to not finish what we’ve started. It preys on our fatigue and laziness and allows us to chase comfort rather than the things vital for our growth inside and out.

The other often more dangerous symptom of giveupitis is it’s infamous ability to let us endlessly procrastinate. Not quite feeling up to hitting the ZGYM today? “That’s okay,” it tells you. “Just do it tomorrow or the next day.” Pretty soon weeks even months have gone by and your health and fitness goals are nowhere in sight anymore.

Strangely, giveupitis often shows up the closer we are to reaching our goals rather than when we’ve just begun our fitness journeys. Heck, even marathon runners complain that running becomes all the harder as they near the finish line because of all the fatigue coupled with anticipation and expectations.

The same is true when you find yourself at the end of one my workouts. It’s easy to start slowing down, missing reps and getting plain lazy even though the workout is not over. This is where I need you to really push yourselves even harder and not fall victim to giveupitis! 99% of the time the fatigue, the desire to give up is all in your head. Your body is doing just fine, but it’s your mind that wants to quit. Coaches always insist to their athletes that if you’re not careful, your mind will quit much sooner than your body. That logic is just as true for us warriorz!

My morning has been a perfect giveupitis moment. My cat left me a present on my floor (starts with ‘c’ and ends with ‘rap’). I didn’t put the cap on the formula bottle so when I shook it, hot water and gloopy formula flew everywhere, including my clothes. Then, I got pulled over by the police this morning (forgot to renew my registration)! And, not going to lie, seeing what the workout was today added to it, haha 🙂
It would be so easy to just fall back into bed and say, “Nope! Today is done!” Which is pretty much what I wanted to do. But, I changed my clothes. Got an iced black coffee at the coffee shop. Dropped the baby off at his wonderful babysitter. Had the best experience at the BMV (seriously). Now, I’m going to clean my house with my favorite cleaner, while listening to my favorite music and singing at the top of my lungs. And I’m going to make this workout my b*tch.

I have it the worst when I’m trying to recover from being sick. Like right now, had the worst gastro flu ever and its been a week since my last workout and I’m terrified of how I’m going to feel through the first one, so I’m procrastinating, but in my head I’m telling myself I can’t do it before even trying.

    Been there, absolutely!

And just as you say, it sneaks in when I´ve already done the hardest part and start to show progress. I think to myself that a little reward, for being so persistent. By skipping a workout! And then two, five, ten…etc.

Or if I “reward myself” by eating an unhealthy meal I could start thinking well now I can´t work out, I won´t be able to push myself because I feel bloated, might as well not do it and so on.

If I won’t be able to workout for some reason, the next day I will add extra exercise, is that ok? 🙁

Today I was rushed for time & thought I’ll skip todays workout as my job is really active,it won’t make a difference just one day.I actually felt really guilty & did Six:02 #4!

Just felt it yesterday. And I often feel those mind blocks.
I was just going to ask you if you knew some processes to break them. And just came over your article.
I always try to tell me “you can do it”, “keep your mind tight”, or the most “it is not real pain”.
Mostly it works but sometimes my mind take over. I hate this.
When I indulge myself in eating something I shouldn’t have, get me having more of this mind blocks, laziness and procrastination blocks. Carbohydrates are apparently what trigger it most and of course other more unconscious things.
I want to beat my mind.

No. I don’t give up. Pushing through pain and hardship is what motivates me. Exercise is my drug and helps me deal with life’s challenges. I am not perfect but I am proud of my strength. 🙂

Yes the disease hit me today… I did only 2 rounds of today’s benchmark because of the heat wave that’s striking. I just gave up!
